A question about the Steam version and the Generic Patcher

I do apologize if this question has been answered somewhere in the forum but my countless searches yielded no results.

I have the Steam version of SH5. I have taken a very long break (playing DCS World) and Decided to come back and experience some of the new mods and what not for SH5.

I went to install the Wolves of Steel mega mod and I am having a issue with the Generic Patcher. I followed the steps to get a non Steam exe listed elsewhere on this forum and got the exe but when I run the patcher I am getting a error when it gets to patching the exe saying that it can't access the file because it is in use by another process. I have tried everything and no matter what I do it always says that. It will let me continue with patching everything else but I have no way to tell if the exe was actually patched.

Am I stuck on not being able to use any of the mods that require the generic patcher or am I doing something wrong? Is that error normal?

If there is no longer a work around can I buy the digital download version from Amazon? Would that be the same as the disc version?

Thanks for any help!

I just went and tried it on a fresh restart and it still gives me the error. I looked through my processes and I didn't see anything Uplay related. Is there a process that Uplay uses that isn't obvious?

EDIT to add I am also getting a error that the exe is different then expected. I used only the files from the tutorial on how to do this so I don't know what I am doing wrong

Yes I did, I followed that guide step by step exactly. I even reinstalled everything 3 times retrying it just to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Every time I try it no matter what I do I get the in use by another process message. I even tried to copy the exe to my second HD and pointed the config of generic patcher to it there and it still says its in use.

I also tried TheDarkWraiths method and I couldn't get the patch to install to get the exe, It just kept saying wrong version.

install a clean version of sh5 patch it to 1.2 and then follow the how to use the generic patcher with steam guide .... cos the generic patcher works only with 1.2 version of the game

AADrcw 11-08-15 04:15 PM

Steam downloads the 1.2 version. The Ubisoft patches don't work on the steam version. (tried every one from their website and they all say wrong version or something along those lines)

When I start a fresh installed steam version it says 1.2 on the main menu. so I know its at 1.2 to start with. I followed the steam patcher guide perfectly and I get the same result each time. I am using the files directly from the guide as well.

I went through your guide and unfortunately I am still getting the exe is in use by another process from the generic patcher. I wonder if its because I am on windows 10 that I can't get it to patch the exe.

Hi AA
AFAIK this has worked successfully for Steam gamers.
Have you tried running windows 10 in a compatibility mode?

I would always advise to get a new dvd version whenever possible.

Alright, After messing with it for days I have finally figured out what was happening. No matter what I did on Windows 10 I could not get the exe to patch.

I installed SH5 on my laptop which is running Windows 8.1 and tried it there. It gave me the same error at first but I realized I forgot to close steam. Upon closing steam it worked flawlessly. I then copied that exe over to my Windows 10 Desktop and tried the patcher on the already patched exe and it worked perfectly.

It seems that the patcher can't start with a clean unpatched exe on Windows 10 but once the exe has been patched you can use the patcher to activate and deactivate patches as needed. I went through as tested it on windows 10 by enabling and disabling the intro movies several times to make sure before coming here to post my results.

Hopefully this will help any newer or returning players that have the steam version on Windows 10.
