It would be nice if it was, they'd be able to change the search area based on the local currents and hopefully find the rest of it and the FDRs, although it would still be a needle in a haystack even with a slightly reduced search area.

ABC is reporting that FAA officials are saying it's from a Boeing aircraft but the Beeb is reporting that there have been other Boeing crashes in the area where the part was found.

The part i saw on the video looked quite fresh, it had mussel shells on it but otherwise looked clean.

Interesting. About a week after the disappearance, I was told by a fella "they're looking in the wrong area. Its over near Madagascar"

Finding it at Réunion tells us almost nothing about where the plane went down beyond confirming that it went into the Indian Ocean. Floating objects routinely drift many thousands of miles in such timescales, and there is no way to reliably 'work backwards' from where it ended up to a crash site.
Edit: take a look at this buoy tracking data, for an idea of the problem: http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/5...ml#post9062874 |
Counting down for the 'Tin Foil Hat' posts.
