Overhauling the Classics?
From the way things look, there don't seem to be too many developers interested in creating hardcore naval sims these days, and I've been wondering.
Would it be within the realm of possibility to do an update/overhaul on some of the classics? I wouldn't mind playing, say, Destroyer Command with high res 16:9, perhaps updated 3D models, and better textures and such. Maybe people who know what they're doing could even add shaders or even HDR effects. I'm not a programmer, so I don't know what you'd have to do or if it's even possible, but maybe some new .dll files, perhaps some tweaks to other files, and then some 3D and texture work would re-vivify some of these old titles. I can do textures and 3D models and such, and I sure would like to see community updates to Sub Command, Dangerous Waters, i688, Fleet Command, Destroyer Command, and others. I miss the days of the great naval sims. Is something like that possible with any of the old titles, or am I dreaming? :hmmm: |
Welcome back
Oubaas!:salute: after a four year silent run! I still play DC & SHII.

Thanks!
Thanks for the welcome back! I guess I've been wandering and messing around with other things or something. Man, where did four years go?
So you're still playing DC and the other classics? I'm messing around with Silent Hunter 4, Dangerous Waters, Sub Command, Fleet Command, PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, and I'm toying with the idea of re-installing Enigma. I just bought the Steam Complete Naval Warfare pack so I don't have to fool around with my discs. I also just acquired something called, "Wargame: Red Dragon" and have been having a lot of fun being annihilated. Still learning the interface and all, but it's fun. I guess I've been busy with horses, playing Euro Truck Simulator 2, my racing sims, flight sims, and train sim, and hanging around having fun with my wife. But I got to missing the Navy stuff. So playing the old classics, I got to thinking, I've seen a lot of titles brought back to life by community effort. Has anyone ever looked hard at the old Navy classics to determine whether they could be brought up to speed with modern systems and their capabilities? It would take someone with more knowledge of programming and such than I have to figure it out, but I'd be willing to provide some labor for a project. It's good to be back, and thanks again for the welcome! :salute: |
