Das Boot

Has anyone ever played the 1990 PC game Das Boot? Please tell me what you think. In my opinion that is the best OLD submarine game around. :D

welcome aboard!

JasonKR!:Kaleun_Salute: Sorry but it's still Aces of the Deep with the band playing as you reenter port!:woot:

So have you actually played Das Boot?? Its not the graphics of Das Boot that appeals to me, its more of the challenge and atmosphere. I have also played Aces. It obviously has better graphics, more missions, more sounds (the crew talks) and everything than Das Boot but I don't see how it creates the kind of classic underwater suspense that Das Boot has. When you actually see a third person view of your sub under water in Das Boot, the sound is EERIE. When you a fire a torpedo in Das Boot it doesn't feel as hasty as it does in Aces. The sound of firing a torpedo in Das Boot really makes you wonder whether it will end up at the target, or not. But if suspense is NOT what you are looking for, then sure Aces of the Deep is the best old sub game in that regard. But for a game like Das Boot thats less than 800kb once extracted, it surprisingly goes a long way. The interface is simple yet very engaging. Only 5 missions, but each can take a couple of hours or more to complete and they do make you feel like playing them again and again, since the game lets you improve your score. Put it this way, Das Boot must be the best old submarine game for a game that does not need any mods, a game thats perfectly fine just by itself. :har: And yes I have played other sub games, including the Silent Hunter series. :yep:

Hello, JasonKR

Good to hear from someone else who retains a respect for classic older games; I haven't even heard of this one so I'll look out for a copy.

I still thoroughly enjoy a good rampage through older games (like "Prisoner Of War") because the atmosphere, including music as a part of this, surpasses many newer games despite the graphics not being as polished. The fear and tension in Prisoner Of War can be terrible to experience. And, as you point out, the sound effects in some older games can be far superior too.
