USS Winston Churchill!!!!
While reading this article about the USS Theodore Roosevelt being sent to patrol off the Yemen coast, they list other US ships in the area. And one of them is the USS Winston Churchill. Not a thing wrong with having a ship named after the famous PM of Great Britain, was just surprised to see it. I don't know the procedure the US Navy uses to name ships, but thought this was kind of neat myself. From the article-
"The other U.S. combat ships near Yemen are: the destroyers USS Forrest Sherman and USS Winston Churchill; the minesweepers USS Sentry and USS Dextrous; and three amphibious ships carrying about 2,200 Marines, the USS Iwo Jima, the USS New York and the USS Fort McHenry. The USNS Charles Drew, the USNS Laramie and the USNS Arctic also are nearby. " http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/...ing/ar-AAbpek8 |
By tradition, the Churchill also always has a Royal Navy navigator (on exchange with the USN) assigned to her as part of the crew. The only US ship to permanently carry a foreign officer on board.

Nice to you guys named a ship just a shame this has not happen here.

^ close enough! HMS Marlborough (after Churchill's ancestor-the Duke) which had assisted USS Cole during the Aden crises, had a US NAVY officer permanently assigned to her crew. HMS Marlborough has been sold to Chile as Almirante Condell. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...k_-_290678.jpgHMS Marlborough

Umm...
http://www.rnsubs.co.uk/Boats/BoatDB...churchill1.jpg We had a whole class of submarines named after him, one of whom remains the only nuclear submarine to sink an enemy warship. :03: |
