Value of ship.

I'm on my first mission in SH4. I've played SH3 for some time and now i find it a bit difficult adjusting to SH4. In my mission i had to take picture in a Japanese port. It was stressful but i've done it. Getting out was easier than getting in :cool: A few miles off the coast, i sink a merchant and was chased by two destroyer. I played cat and mouse with them (with a sub that was unfamiliar) and i'm proud to say that i manage to sink one of them !

On tonnage that is roughly equal, is there more point for a military target or a merchant ?

You want to take a peek, go into the \Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Sea\ and into the subfolders for each ship type, open the .cfg file in notepad.

An oiler and a destroyer with about the same displacement and equal renown, near as I can tell it's geared to tonnage only. Sink the Yamato escorted by 12 destroyers and get pounded by depth charges for 12 hours, or sink a series of unescorted unarmed merchant ships totalling 60,000 tons, same renown. Silly but that's the way they programmed it.

Be advised the numbers in the CFG files are a base, if you have the difficulty settings (manual targeting, map contact updates, dud torpedoes, etc.) set at less than 100% (full realism) you get a percentage of the renown instead of the whole smash.

Renown is the same, however the awards/medals are based on Type of ship sunk; total tonnage; progression of sucessful patrols; "Realism" settings in the Game Play Options. You'll get a higher award for the Type of ship you sink.....even over the amount of tonnage sunk. Two Heavy Cruisers will give you more tonnage than one Fleet Carrier.....yet, the Carrier will produce a higher award when sunk, when compared to the two Cruisers.

The Award System is terrible in the stock game. You might want to read this 8 year old thread.

Tried your medals mod once, crashed the game since I still have 1.4 - one of these days I will get around to buying 1.5 (or the gold disk).

Personally I use my own mods, with "bang for your buck";

Using the 125x125 I do more damage per fish, and with "Gone Asiatic";

I can have a lot of torpedoes. :arrgh!: Consequently I get the "Victory Cross" on every patrol, although the medals for the crew seem to vary all over creation. I also found that renown points are deducted according to how badly damaged the sub is when I end the patrol, if it's really bad they'll even insist on scrapping the sub and sometimes ending your career.
