Need help with mods

Okay, guys, I'm home for the week for Spring Break, and I thought I might as well pop my submarine cherry and start getting SH4 seaworthy.

It seems I've forgotten a hole or two, because after [a very improvised] download and install of both the Real Fleet Boat and the Run Silent, Run Deep Campaign, Silent Hunter would crash upon load-up.

Since I assume I have done everything wrong, I have taken the precaution of uninstalling Silent Hunter and therefore erasing any mistakes I've made. So, now I turn to more experienced dock-crews to help.

From what I was seeing, you guys recommend this one mod installing program, but it seems that my computer simply cannot find the url where I can get this installer from; I'm going to assume that means that the website has gone down.

So, what do I do? I have until next Sunday to figure this out, but I'd like to get underway well before then. There's a war on, after all!

Okay, obligatory update.

After some scrounging around, I happened to stumble across a download on here for JSGME. I'm going to try to figure this out on my own if I can, but you know where I'm going if this ends up tits-up.

JSGME is simple, and comes with a User Guide. If that doesn't help, of course we'll be glad to answer any and all questions to the best of our (limited in my case) ability. :sunny:

just check the sticky threads on this forum and the sh4 mods forum and almost all questions have the answers found there

Okay, so I'm still having an issue.

The game will go through its intro, then hit that first loading screen where the bar fills. Once it finishes loading, the game crashes to desktop. I have no idea how or why it is doing this.

Worth mentioning is that when I put in both the RFB 2.0 and the RSRDC_RFB_V575 on, I got a pop-up saying something to the effect that several files had already been changed by RFB and could lead to an adverse effect.

Does anyone know what to do?

We need more information.

What version of Silent Hunter do you have?

Is it a download, Steam, or disc install?

Where on your hard disc did you install it?

What Operating System do you have?

What are your computer specs?

What is your exact mod list?

Were you able to launch and play SH without mods before?

That in itself is NOT likely to be the problem. JSGME is designed to detect files that will be overwritten just to keep your game safe. Most often the overwrite is harmless, especially when, as in this case, the follow-on mod was designed to work with the main mod. Sometimes the file is even totally unimportant, like the readme.

I had the same issue so i did a clean install and only added 1 mod at a time till i found the problem mod then didnt use that mod.

Farflung Wanderer 03-08-15 02:21 PM

Okay, plot twist!

It seems that it's not an issue with mods, but with the game itself, because even on pure Vanilla, it simply crashes to desktop while loading the main menu.

What do I do?

Do what Torpx said above. That way the forum members have a map to help point out potential conflicts.

I'll post information after I reinstall it, this time to the C: drive. I had put it on the D: drive earlier. Because I have a better version of DirectX, I'm not installing 9.0c. Is that a mistake on my part?

I will answer the question that I used to be able to play it, but after uninstalling it on the D: drive and then reinstalling it onto the D: drive, it simply wouldn't run.

SilentPrey 03-08-15 02:39 PM

Yes, always run the DirectX install. It won't downgrade your computer; it just makes sure that the game you're installing can talk to DirectX.

Farflung Wanderer 03-08-15 04:21 PM

Okay, I think I found the source of my problem.

Silent Hunter IV is currently at version 1.0

If I remember correctly, the mods run at version 1.5 of the game, requiring me to buy U-Boat missions.

That is correct.

merc4ulfate 03-11-15 09:39 AM

crikkies ... version 1?

Use version 1.5 make sure you do a clean install or your still going to get crap.

CLEAN INSTALL

Then add JSGME

JSGME

Here are some tutorials for after you have added the game and JSGME:

TUTORIALS

When using mods you need to remember that there are different version of several of the mega mods because no two computers are running the same thing. Some run version 1.4 ... why ?? I haven't a clue but there are several version of mods so make sure you are running the correct mod for the game version you have installed.

Not only that but make sure the mods you put together are compatible with each other. You can not run RSRD for RFB with Trigger Maru Overhaul 1.9 all your going to do is get a headache so make sure you read the documentation wit the mods. Make sure you have the latest version of that mod and make sure you read through the post about and documentation on what order you add the mods.

If you have :

Websters maneuvering fix
ISP 2.6
RSRD 5
TMO 2

I guarantee your going to run into issues and cause yourself one huge headache. Those are good mods but in the wrong order and with incompatible mods they create a lot of crashes and frustration.

An american mix I use is:

1_TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
1_TMO_25_small_patch
RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
Improved Ship Physics 2.6_TMO_RSRDC
TMO_Visuals_for_RSRDC
Fixed_CD_sonar_RSRDC
Classe_Balao_CamoTri
Pacific Sound Mod
Nav Map Make-Over v2.1

A German mix I use is:

OpsMonsun_V705
OMv705_to_V720
OMv720_Patch5
Traveller Mod v1.7 for OM 7.20
Nav Map Make-Over for OM
Kriegsmarine Chart Colour Scheme 2
Aircraft_reflections
Webster's Eliminate Floating Plankton for v1.4 and v1.5
Webster's Missing Voices for v1.4 & v1.5
Webster's Ship Manuvering Fix for v1.4 and v1.5
GE01 Operation Tiger
Alternate OM Loading Screen
plants small
rocks small

When asking question about the game is is also very helpful for you to list your game version and go into JSGME and copy the mods list from the application and post it here so others can view it to see if there might be a conflict issue.

To do that you go to the application
JSGME
Click Tasks (in the center above help)
Go to EXPORT ACTIVATED MODS LIST TO

Then click CLIPBOARD

Once you have done that all you need to do is create a post and then somewhere in the message right click and click paste (provided you have not copied anything else) and your mods list will be in the message.

It is always best practice to NOT install the game to your system drive (C:)
and not into the program folder.

Just install it to a separate drive in it's own folder.

Happy Hunting
