A couple of questions on SH1 and SH2...

Greetings fellow Skippers!...

I have decided to relive some old, but fond memories by playing Silent Hunter 1 and 2. My first question is...can anyone tell me where I can find a downloadable SH1 that works on Vista? My SH Commanders Edition will not start because it does not support full screen mode. Any way around that?...and my second question is...is there a version of S3D for SH2 and Destroyer Command? (since they both use the same ship models). The reason for that is because I looked up several of the ships online and noticed the British V and W class destroyers are missing a smoke stack in the game, where in real life, they had two...a short stack, (as in the game) and a taller, thinner one just behind the bridge. If there is an editor, I would like to add the missing smoke stack...if possible.

Good Evening,

I also have been looking for an editor for SH-2. I would like to remove the sea noises so that my hydrophone will work better. I did it in SH-3; however, the only thing I get in SH2 when I click on editor is text. Anyone know how I can remove the sea noises from SH-2?
Sorry I can't help with your situation.

Thanks for any assistance,

Bob R.

I don't think there is anything similar to S3D in SH2. I did some skins for a number of ships, and to integrate them into the ship we had to use a hex-editor.

For SH1, as it is an old DOS program, I suggest trying with DOSbox.

If you could find the offending "sea noises" sound files that you mentioned, I think that you could;
1) make a backup in case you change your mind
2) edit the sound files to be 'blank' sound or reduce their volume.
It would play for the correct amount of time however it would be quiet - blank.

One program I have used since the late 90's is:
http://www.goldwave.com/
There are many other sound editing programs. For sure, Goldwave has no spyware etc.

Good luck & Happy Hunting!

Ok, I downloaded DOSbox...however, I'm not sure how it's going to make SH1 work...anyone know how?

SH1 and SHCE is a DOS game released just about the time Win 95 became the operating system that people used because it is/was a much easier user interface. People were getting by with Win 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups Win 3.11 and DOS, however when Win 98 and especially Win XP were released, it sealed the fate of SH1 & SHCE.

Yes, through convoluted procedures that were simply explained, it was still possible to play SH1 SHCE, however many people still could not follow the installation procedures. I can't count the number of people that I walked through the steps.

Finally, DOSBox advanced to a level that made it relatively easy to install SH1 & SHCE again by emulating a DOS Operating System on modern computers that is compatible with Silent Hunter 1 and Silent Hunter Commanders Edition.

So that is what DOSBox does and why it is necessary.

Here is how you can do it with Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7 & Win 8:

It is an outside website that is safe, and explains how to install Silent Hunter on DOSBox:

If anyone knows where a walk-through is around here, I'm sure they will chime in.

So, Good luck to you and Happy Hunting!

I use D-Fend Reloaded, it's a front end for DOSbox (makes everything alot easier) and it'll set the game up for you automatically. SH1 plays perfectly.
