Lost renown; don't know why...

New campaign, type II out of Kiel, completed 2 missions. First mission nothing happened; went out, spent my 24 hours patrolling a grid, & returned with all torps intact. Zero renown.
Second patrol; completed the 24 hour grid patrol, then on 9-13-39 I sunk a French merchant and a British merchant. With all torps spent, I returned to Kiel and saw that I had somehow garnered a minus 247.45 renown for the patrol.
I can't figure out why; crew returned in good health, sub undamaged, was at war with both France and Britain on that date.
Anybody?...:hmm2:

The ship you sunk may have been a vichy french ship (Neutral) or a ship registered to the Netherlands (flag often mistaken for french)

either way the ships would have been neutral resulting in a loss of renown

do you happen to recall the color of the ship sinking icons on the nav map?

Was one of the ship sinking icons green? if so, you sank a neutral ship

Greystone 02-08-15 12:33 PM

Good grief, the map icons are both green...
Kills were at night, hard to make out the flags. One must've been French Vichy & the other I ignorantly took as British, but was in fact Norwegian. Lesson learned; pay close attention to flags & dates.
Thanks for the feedback, GoldenRivet..
What the hell, only 2 missions; think I'll start over..

Haha, rookie mistake that we've all made. Now get rid of map colour contacts and learn to be very patient with your IDing, and that means getting close and even risk losing a potential kill. It'll take much longer but you feel more tension and and euphoric relief after stalking your prey whether it's a kill or not. Sometimes just getting away alive is enough.

Whichever way you choose to play - enjoy it and tell us how it goes. :salute:

SHII ROOM ?

Where is the SHII room ?
I'm still playing this game and i'm not alone to play (Its the only SH serie that have "REAL" DC openned (NOT SCRAP AI) WHY ther no more room for it ? thar realy suck !

You shouldn't be getting any Vichy ships in 39 so it was probably one of the low countries you sunk.

Herr-Berbunch; thanks for the sense of welcome in your post. Nice..
Anyway, started a new career; this time with a 7B in Wilhelmshaven (sp?), instead of spending all that fuel/time in a type II from Kiel just getting to the North Sea.
You said something about getting rid of map color contacts. Not sure what you mean...

Hideho neighbor. IIRC there is a mod or maybe its just in the game that makes it so all ships on the map show as grey so there is noway to tell if its a valid target without seeing the flag up close and personal.

GoldenRivet 02-09-15 02:04 AM

You know greystone i have to admit to my own rookie mistake.

It was a few years back and i was patrolling dangerously close to Plymouth and i spotted a few destroyers headed eastbound in the channel. It was dark, sighted the scope on the aft most destroyer at the upper end of torpedo range and i fired a spread of 2 tightly grouped.

One impacted the destroyer astern the other missed

the stricken ship slowed to about 1-2 knots and hunkered down very low in the water while the others continued on

I closed the range to finish her once the others were gone and much to my surprise as i closed in... those flags were kriegsmarine

"What the hell are you doing 50 miles off Plymouth!" i said

i quickly left the area and continued my patrol

I was not credited with a sinking of the destroyer thankfully because as far as i know in the game it never sank.

EDIT: in reference to the above comments about map contacts colors... if you are using GWX the map contacts are gray and will not show red for enemy and green for neutral etc on the nav map when a ship is spotted (in the original release, ALL map contacts were color coded sunk or not) however - in GWX even though the "living" ship's map contact icon is gray, it will still show red or green or blue once sunk - i think that is what scout is talking about

GoldenRivet; thanks for letting me know I'm not alone in the occasional "shoot first and ask questions later" slip-up. I can kind of understand why you wouldn't want to sneak up first and get a better look at a couple destroyers though.. Also, thanks for bringing me up to speed on the colored map contact changes from vanilla to GWX.
Herr-Berbunch; actually, I am sort of new here.. it's been several years since I last dropped by. I'd been playing a career, a couple years into it, and after weeks on end of roaming around without making enemy contact, I got, well, bored. So, I hung up my sextant..
Then the inevitable new computer; leaving the lovely WinXP and having to deal with the dreaded craziness of Win7 with all it's non-intuitive "improvements", including not being able to run SH3. By and by, I did a search for ways to get SH3 to run on Win7 and eventually found it. So, here I am again; looking forward to the happy times and hoping to avoid a mid-career repeat of the empty-ocean doldrums..
