SH4 ATO Roll Call
It's pretty quiet in this forum. Anybody playing SH4 on the German side?
|
Playing OM cruising off Ireland mid 1940 at the moment.....
|
Have not in quite a while, but will again :yep:
|
Yep, started about a month ago with OpMonsun and Omegu. Got tired of TMO.
But, sure do miss the PK. My first impressions; Allied airplanes are deadly, a UBoat without detecting radar is dead meat Determining speed much more difficult than it was on Pacific mods Allied escorts seem to find me much easier than Pacific mods Harder to get hits using UBoat's TDC, especially if you're "on the move", and ranges beyond 5k meters. But, it is challenging and renewed by desire to play since I fell into boredom on the Pacific side. |
Since my gaming was curtailed for several years I've been out of the loop. First I'll be running three careers side-by-side in SH3, one from each available base, starting in August. After I'm into September I'll be adding SH4, and maybe have some fun with Aces again. I'll be going through the war month by month, adding more games as the dates come up. :sunny:

Cruising
I'm on a world cruise, just for the heck of it. Long, long voyage.
|
Not been at (vritual) sea for long, but I am never far from these forums. Some day it will hook me again and I will be back to sea with SH3 and SH4 / OM because nothing has come out after those games that seems better. Some day.
Good hunting :salute: |
Not at the moment. Recently I played a career in OM which was detailed here
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=215991 Not that anyone noticed, or commented anyway lol But it's a great mod and I really enjoyed it. First time back in German boats since my SH3 days. The KiUB is just excellent, my favorite attack periscope screen in any subsim or mod. jldjs -- Do you use a nomograph? It's essential to be using map contacts really, and if you are, the nomgraph will make it quick and easy to determine a speed. Make a mark on the target's location. Wait a few minutes, I usually used a 3 minute interval. Then mark again. Use the compass to measure the distance travelled and then use the ruler on the nomograph to determine speed. My apologies if you already know this. |
Thx Threadfin but I know how to use map, contacts on, and I use 3 min
15 sec for interval to get Kms. The difficulty is with determining speed in the midst of attacking a convoy. No time to plot! With PK on US subs you could guess and check on the attack map. Can't do that on U boats! But, does make it more challenging to attack and evade! |
Not so Threadfin!
Actually, I really loved your account of your adventures in U47, just so you know. Good hunting
|
Thanks mate. Appreciate it.
jldjs -- Yes, I thought you would probably know what to do, kindly disregard the advice. FWIW, the vast majority of convoys I contacted during that career were making 6 knots, but of course not all were. |
On the convoy speed I too concluded 5-6kts was best guess. It's those pesky escorts! I just can't stop tryin' to hit them! I'm still trying to get closer to TFs and convoys.
BTW, enjoyed your posts re U-47. |
Thanks very much. As I mentioned in those reports I found that sea state was key for me getting in on convoys and task forces. There were only a few instances where I got in when the sea was calm, during both submerged and surfaced attacks.

hadn't play in a while but getting ready to fire up again with a sick family member and with her passing on have a week off of work
|
I'm off for a lottery ticket!
I'm into March '43, and just had an INCREDIBLE run in with a large convoy in AM71. Ships everywhere including the first T3's I've seen. Don't you know I've got to take out escorts! Saving the game (thinking I'll be dead soon) I throw caution to the wind and go crazy. 7 escorts go down with one fish each. It almost seemed they only wanted to go to the sinking ships, rather than come after me. Enough of them remained to nearly sink me; I've got three dead, many wounded, but I am underway on the surface and headed for France.:o
