CAN'T RUN SH3 WITH WINDOWS 7 PRO-JAN. 2015

Hi everyone. I have been playing, and loving, about 50 hours of SH4 for a week now. It runs almost perfectly on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit PC.
A few years ago I bought a DVD copy of SH3, but I never installed or played it. I just broke it out because I want to play the Type XXI Electroboot. I installed the game but it wouldn't run. I got an error message.
I read some of the thread that deals with this problem, but the posts are many years old. I was wondering if someone has a current solution to the problem. Would lowering the resolution of the monitor do the trick?
Also, has anyone had success with the download version from Amazon, rather than the disc version that I have? Thanks very much. Jeff

I just tried lowering my monitor resolution to 1280x720, and the game still won't run. This is the error message I get: This application can be launched with a release version of Microsoft Windows 95OSR2.1/98/ME/NT4.0/2000/XP server 2003 only.

That old man Star-force removal thread should help

Yes that should do it. Also, I posted a helpful link for you in your other thread.

This is the copy that I use (Silent Hunter III), with the most recent patch included (1.4.0.1) and no StarForce protection. You can play without the DVD too.

Have fun!

It is important when purchasing dvd discs that you get a Starforce Free Version.

The dvd you are looking for will be showing ESS632.

The Starforce Free Version will be Black at the Bottom and White at the Top.

A typical File Version showing in Properties is 8.2.160.0

Product Version 1.4.0000

Date modified 18/08/2006

Do not be misled by the silver band at the top of the Dvd case that says Games in white letters which is irrelevant.

The Starforce Version will be Black at the Bottom and Silver at the Top.

These have a Product Version showing in Properties of 1.00.0000

This version does not have the latest patch and has copy write protection.

The currently available new Encore dvd's are Canadian but can be purchased from the USA.

The only downside with these dvds is that you cannot choose where to install as it will only install to the default drive.

Try for example "C:\Games\SH3" instead of "C:\Games\Silent Hunter III".

It works for me with the "Encore Edition."

And I did a back up (copy just in case for my own use) and mount it if necessary with "Virtual CloneDrive".

I did a test with "SH3 Version Check" and it shows 1.4.0.1.

..

I agree, the difference must be those spaces in the folder name. I've run into that with SH3 years ago. The SH3 installer doesn't like it.

It must be taking the lack of space in a submarine to literal. ;)

Really weird.
If you choose to keep the folder name (Silent Hunter III), there's no problem if you install the game in C:\Program Files.
Elsewhere, impossible.

I would like to know why exactly; maybe a genius around will explain to us?

Or... there's a BUG in the installer. :har:

Maybe somewhere in the code they have C:\Program Files encapsulated inbetween "" (double double quotes). This should take care of space-in-path issues most of the time. Or it uses the environment variable %ProgramFiles%, which might have them built in.

That's some interesting comments guys.

The addition I had was the double dvd one with SH2 and SH3.

The default installation was to the default drive program (x86) folder which was ok if you wanted it there.

It would not allow you to install to another drive other than the default drive.

Came up everytime with an installer error.

Like mine (Encore Edition), 2 DVDs; one for SH2, the other for SH3.

Let me tell you a secret...: it's hidden, somewhere, in my appartment.

:arrgh!:

Too precious...

Berbster,
Hope I am not making this more confusing but, my SH3 DVD is coded ESS632/D on the spine, and is Starforce protected.
Is the /D the determining factor or not.

Apologies if I am confusing the matter, Berbster.

Worst case scenario, you can always buy it through Steam. I bought that one this time around and I had to do the resolution fix so it would start correctly in Win 7, but after that I've had no issues.
