Quite an amazing feat all things considered but having visited her I'm not sure if I like the way she was eventually cut into pieces and put on display tbh....a successful tourist attraction nevertheless.

:hmmm:Actually though, my daughter just having gotten a masters in Museum Science...ie how to make an in$titution profitable...the object/artifact is to be preserved: Rule #1. Since living in a Uboat was in fact a very compartmentalized life style and the vessels were later built in prefab segments... breaking the vessel into 'compartments' really is no crime. Given its aged condition from under the sea etc. and delicacy, even visitors trudging through are detrimental to its preservation. Think human respiration at Lascaux Cave for example. The IX Uboat in Chicago fortunately got moved out of the elements, indoors, but tours through it are hard on the aged steel. More people can actually see more of the relic from all perspectives w/o actually touching it. The USS Pampanito in San Francisco really needs not to be in salt water; corrosion is evident and is not being properly maintained and the conning tower is now off limits.
