I'm currently reading a book on the capture of the U-505 and the U-995, both of which survive intact and on display today. The U-505's story is fascinating...

EDIT - The U-505 is on display in Chicago and we have business there in 2015. I'm going to do everything I can to hit one of the private guided onboard tours they will be doing.

Hi Foggy

Yes I'm currently reading this book at the moment. I have read and can recommend "Steel Boat, Iron Hearts - A U-boat Crewman's Life Aboard U-505".

Lucky you to visit the Chicago Museum. I might get the opportunity some day. I am fortunate however to live only 20 minutes away from Birkenhead where U-534 is berthed (all be it cut into sections).

RustySubmarine has photos of it on his subsim profile page.

I visited in 2013 the Chicago Museum, and I see the U-505. Great experience, but:

- You can´t take photos in the interiors.
- Only acess to the boat was in a tour of 20´ (insufficient for me!!!).

I took some nice photos, but with my Nikon D310, with a "supercharged" flash. The "hangar" where is the boat has some dark light.

Regards.

fitz, on the website they said that the current standard tour is only 15 minutes, but as of 2015 they are going to start doing a private tour of the sub in the early hours before the museum opens on weekends and after the tour is over they will give you free time to explore the submarine. I'm hoping to do that one and I'm also hoping that the tour is more extensive than just dropping down into it briefly...

Nice shot. I take one from the same site. You can see the poor light in the "hangar". It is very difficult to take clear, detailed photos. From the lateral, you need a good zoom to take the turm. My interior tour lasted 20' aprox, with a lot of people, I could see the interior, but I prefer a visit with 3-4 peoples and take shots.

BTW, I had a SUBSIM hoodie and hat, with a U Boat image, and the guide guy see me with some precaution...The guy told some generalities about the boat and I see him with a sarcastic smile. :O:

U-505 was still outside when we lived in Chicago 29 years ago. I took the tour many times and quickly learned to always be the last person in line. Everyone else hurried through in a jammed mass while I, being well acquainted with the general layout of the boat, was free to linger and get a good look at some of the more important details.
