What was a US citizen doing in a foreign country with loaded weapons? As things stand ATM, I wouldn't go anywhere near Mexico.

According to the article, the guy took a wrong turn on the interstate and couldn't get off the road into Mexico.
Not entirely sure how much stock to put into that, but that's the story. :hmmm:

If a Mexican citizen were to cross our borders with as many weapons as this guy did, what would we have done?

Would we accept the "I knew I should have made that left turn at La Rumorosa?"

A local news radio station here in Los Angeles had an interview with a defense attorney for the Marine in which the attorney said he, the attorney, had gone down to the particular turnoff the Marine had become trapped in and noted there was no signage indicating neither the proper route to the US side nor the exact location of the border. Added to this was the fact there was no place to turnaround to correct any mistake by a driver. The attorney said the problem has now been corrected by the installation of new signage (by the State of California, I'm guessing) and the building of a turnout on the US side of the border so drivers can reverse direction...

I wonder if the lack of signage and turnabout ability was not something taken advantage of by the Mexican authorities to entrap unwary travelers, sort of like a speed trap?...

I guess the judge made his decision after the bribe, er, um, excuse me, "contribution" cleared the bank...

Isn't that how Mexican justice works? Only let the victim go once the family has been fleeced for everything that can be milked out of them?

I have crossed the same border (Tijuana) the marine did quite a few times and I must say it is quite well marked that it leads to Mexico. "Last US exit" is marked from at least 5 miles away on the freeways (I-5 and 805 they merge at the border) and even after the last US exit there is a clearly marked U turn to return into the states.

From what i have heard he failed to declare his firearms when he got pulled over into Secondary Inspection. That's why they were so hard on him.

Regardless one cannot take firearms into Mexico without permits, but not declaring will get you into even more trouble.
