Bernard Fisher, Medal of Honor, Vietnam War RIP

Quote:

When his fellow pilot crashed in the A Shau Valley on March 10, 1966, Major Bernard Fisher knew that a rescue chopper wouldn't reach him in time, so Fisher called off the rescue and landed on the debris-littered runway himself. He made it back with the other pilot and, on January 19, 1967, became the first airman in Vietnam to receive the Medal of Honor.

Good thing he was flying an E model. They had plenty of space having been ASW platforms in the Navy. The USAF modified them back to a ground pounder. They had side by side seating and you could fit 8 or 9 people in back if you needed. The A-1 in my pic is either an H or J model single seater.

Still it took some guts to risk that not knowing if your comrade is still alive. Hell it tooks guts just fly the Skyraider aginst the NVA close enough to have the kitchen sink tossed at you.
