Das Boot movies?

So I just bought the 2-disc blu-ray "Director's Cut" of Das Boot.

I thought this would be the extended version like where Thompsen yells "Alarm" when the phone rings at the bar. It's not.

There seems to be an "uncut miniseries" version also.

Which is the "maximum version" of Das Boot?

2 disc 4h 42mins (282 mins) long.

Mhh...i bought it too at May, 1 disk blue ray... 218min long... whats missing in this version? Only bonus material or also scenes from the movie?

There is another "Steel Book" Version which has 3 discs blue ray and is 357min (!) long?

Dont you think they just spam this discs with so called "bonus material"?

maillemaker 06-18-14 11:38 AM

OK, so it sounds like I need the miniseries version?

Steve

I think what screwed me is I went here:

http://www.amazon.com/Das-Boot-Origi.../dp/B0001XAOLQ

Then clicked on Blu-Ray, which takes you to the Directors Cut version, not the miniseries version.

Is the miniseries version available on blu-ray?

I have all the different versions. The 'Original, Uncut Version' is, as Jim quoted, 4 hours 53 minutes long, an hour and a half longer than the 'Director's Cut', and it's all movie. The 'Uncut' version is in my opinion the best, even though the 'Director's Cut' has slightly better sound and picture quality. It includes many scenes of the crew interacting with each other, including a humorous "false alarm" dive, which may or may not have involved an actual airplane. There is a lot more character development, especially where 1WO is concerned. In this version he is not the rabid nazi he seems to be in the shorter versions, but rather a troubled and confused young man who joined the navy and the party because it seems to be what everyone is doing, and he just wanted to fit in.

Altogether well worth the money.

Never heard of it. Do you have a link?

[edit] Never mind, I found it on Amazon.de. It appears to be the recent Blu-Ray release which includes the Director's Cut (208 minutes) and the original Theatrical Release (149 minutes), which does indeed total 357 minutes running time for both versions.

[edit 2] The 'Original, Uncut Version' also includes a running narrative by Leutnant Werner, not seen on any of the other versions.

You have to put your DVD player into Schleichfahrt! That fixes it. ;)

Ive watched the theatrical release and the miniseries versions and I was disappointed with the miniseries mainly because it was dubbed differently to gain a 12 certificate in that all the bad language was cut out and some of the lines changed. The person doing the dubbing for some characters was different too. Have I got the definitive version or not it runs for 4 hours and 42 mins

Took me a long time to come to terms with whether the ending could have been improved upon but in war anything can and did happen.

Never watched the dubbed versions. Problem solved. :sunny:

Yes, the 292-minute version is the ultimate, at least as far as material inclusion is concerned. The Director's Cut is shorter, but has better sound, better subtitles and better dubbing.

I just checked out the uncut version. Thank you for making me aware of it, it has some extra scenes and I like it already. I previously had the directors cut. Why did the director cut any of it lol? Its just soooo good.

If you miss the uncut version you are missing

+ a whole bunch more character and story dialog, 95% is not B-roll or filler, its actual movie dialog
+ dirtier submariner jokes (quite good),
+ a whole other engagement with enemy aircraft resulting in some damage (historical accuracy),
+ another ALARM, one where a seagull gets mistaken for enemy aircraft,
+ the captain is a bit lighter hearted and a little bit of a jokester in this version, really adds more depth to the captains character,
+ a 2nd scene showing how slow and pain in the ass actual signal decode really was (shortened of course) but very cool,
+ scene where the first watch guys are having coffee before going up on deck at midnight and yaking about the captain and how he is getting married to a Nazi chick, one who was "Fliers" widow who you learn who that is in the opening of the movie,
+ some color facts about "Nazi chicks"
+2 more scenes with Johan the machinist.
+ the conclusion to the towel in the face scene that you knew was there but abruptly cut from all the other cuts,
+ another boredom scene
+ another engine room scene
+ even dirtier jokes/storytelling in the German way ;)
+ a scene about only one can on the boat lol
+ a scene with the captain in the conning tower doing a roundy roundy check of the surface (B roll)
+ a scene with the captain prepping and pep talking the men before the convoy intercept,
+ expanded destroyer attack scene with depth charging,
+ a cut about a leaky seal on the diesels,
+ excellent narration of the story during boat on the water cutscenes that isnt in the other versions, its just pure Das Boot
+ More sea state 9-10 jokes on the watch deck, in fact its essentially a low grade hurricane that really wasn't even present in the original cuts, stormy weather yes, but not an actual storm "event" we find out that storm lasted a "week" in the uncut version and then 15 days then for a total of 3 weeks and 2 days...
+ A short reading/farting scene
+ A powerful radio broadcast sometime in December altering them to enemy (allied) bombings on the homefront in Cologne and Hamburg. We learn the Chief's wife lives in Cologne. Same scene Thompson's boat has been missing for days. Also Lt Number One, the Fervent Nazi lost his gf two months back in an air raid on Cologne, but since the boat had been at sea for 40 days this really damages his character somewhat because we don't see this at all in any of the cuts, that he lost her and then joined up.
+ There is a scene after they torpedoed the already damaged freighter and there were men on board and Werner actually came close to challenging the Captains decision to abandon the men. A very powerful scene with a line that should have been in all the cuts, "they are ordered to sink ships where the find them and to ask the men who started the war about all the rest" I really wish this was in the directors cut.

+More DCs
+More Damage
+More Terror

The Captain undergoes a real character shift from funny prankster to consoling leader to sort of a dick as time goes on and then when you least expect it he is mercyful on Johann. A brilliant character study. I think the uncut version is scarier more grim and more real. This is one of the rare times when a longer version of the story is better than the shorter cuts. There is a scene where he finds out they are going to La Spezia and shares that with the Chief and 1st and 2nd officer plus blows off some steam.

+We learn about why they are going through Gibraltar into the Mediterranean.
+ An extensive approach scene when they meet up for provisions in Vigo.
+ We learn that 3 boats have docked that the ship in Vigo and 2 have sunk just after they left and the Captain is suspicious, whole story changes here :) So much so that the Captain leaves early without following scheduled orders.

The Gibraltar penetration scene is deceptively lighthearted at first and then well we know how it turns out.

Edit:- Not to worry I've ordered though amazon . It looks like Ebay/Amazon are sourcing from the same place, each had only 4 sets left. Just that Ebay don't deliver down south.

A bit surprised about that, especially as ebay has its own site :hmmm:
