What are our best widescreen options? (1920 x 1080)

Hello all,

I've been trying to fire up my old friend SHIII after many, many years. It's been a disappointment to find that getting it running on a modern monitor is so difficult.

I've searched just about every thread on the topic and I've come up with a few solutions, though I'm wondering if there are any I'm missing out on.

The D3D.dll by Seeadler works and makes the game look surprisingly good, but then the UI gets all screwy.

MaGui Widescreen is what I'm currently using and so far seems to be the best solution I've found. The only issue here is that it isn't 1920 x 1080 like I would like.

Is there anything else I've missed? I'm a big fan of GWX 3 and NYGM. I haven't tried LSH, but basically I'm willing to use any of these three if I could only find a solid combo of 1920 x 1080 and a GUI to go with it.

If your answer is no, it hasn't been done yet, then please tell me the best compromise. What's the closest I can come? Is it MaGui or is there even another solution?

Thanks!

AFAIK, there are three widescreen mods:

CONUS00’s Conus SH3GWXWS 2.3

Makman’s Widescreen MaGui

Rubini’s WideScreen complete GWX&StockSH3

All three are available from Plissken's FTP site. CONUS' mod is for GWX only, Rubini's for stock and GWX. Widescreen MaGUI has multiple versions for most widely used megamods. (I adapted Rubini's Widescreen to NYGM for my own use. It's not too hard if you are comfortable tweaking menu_1024_768.ini.)

All three work at 1360/1366x768. Period. I don't know of any mod that supports higher resolution than that.

Rubini's mod uses the stock periscope/UZO graphics, or whatever you happen to have loaded in on top of them. CONUS' uses a more elegant and better-executed version of the stock views. MaGUI uses Makman's periscope/UZO and, of course, add a lot of other elements as well. Which you prefer is strictly up to your personal taste. None of them will take you beyond 1360/1366x768, though.

Hey guys! Nice to see so many familiar faces (figuratively). I went on my first patrol last night in probably 4 years!

I appreciate the tips BigWalleye, you mentioned some I hadn't found already and I will check them out.

Has there not been enough demand to create a 1920x1080 UI or is there a larger issue at hand which makes it more difficult to do than 1366x768?

Plenty of demand. No supply. I do not know what the issue is, but it seems like there might be a major limitation. Hopefully, one of the experts in this area can explain the difficulty.

From my foyer into the WS mods the dificulty is in the menu_1024_768.ini.

Welcome back old friend...I'm running at a resolution of 1680x1050 on a 22" monitor.

OK. So tell us, please, how you do it. Thanks.

I've got the monitor screen settings on auto and that is the resolution it gives me.

I'm not so sure that means the game is actually running at that resolution Jimbuna. I believe your computer scales to whatever you have SHIII set at once you launch the game.

Unless I have missed something?

BigWalleye 04-05-14 01:05 PM

Got it! And I can even go to 1920x1080 that way. But only the 3D screens look good when I do. The load and menu screens are all squashed down in the lower left and partly missing. The 2D screens are all chopped up - the 1360x768 part is surrounded by whatever else was displayed last. (And I think the peri/UZO views are not right also.) Yes, I can change the d3d9.ini resolution, but the result isn't playable.

How do you correct those problems to get a playable game?

All I can say is that everything looks fine and there appears to be no stretching or distortion.

My eyesight is no longer the best so I can't say definitively but my screenshots look fine.

I believe you. If your eyesight were bad enough to miss the effects I'm referring to, you would need a white stick! I presume there is something in my graphic settings that I need to change. I'll press on it.
