Mods to start out SH4?

Hi guys.

Used to play a ton of Silent Hunter 3 with GWX back in the day. Haven't touched a subsim in five years or so but got the urge to play one again. SHV looks meh so I thought I would try SHIV. Curious if there is a mod like GWX for it that you would suggest. I see as I browse the forums a TMO and OM, but not sure if they are a good place to start. I think the Pacific campaign would be where I would like to start.

Also if I just want to play the pacific campaign do I need to get gold or can I just buy Wolves of the Pacific and enjoy mods?

Thanks for any info. :arrgh!:

A few here...

Welcome Mr. Gord! SH4 is a fun sim good choice! I am not the official welcoming guy but this will get you started. There are some super cool guys on here that will get to your thread when they see it but this will get you started.

Assuming your at 1.5 with uboats

RSRD run silent run deep
Improved stock enviroment v3
Maxoptics imo its good mod

Now if you want to run uboats
add Operation Monson to that list with the patch and upgrade

If you want hard Pacific
TMO its upgrade and patch

Have not tried RFB real fleet battle so don't know.

I am no vet here but those are some good ones.

Go here for some good info http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=155786

Thanks Den. Appreciate the reply. Maybe i will try RSRD and the Improved Enviroment mods to start. What's Maxoptics? Couldn't find anything on it.

Thanks again!

Gives you more zoom on your peri and tbt and binos very handy IMO.

Yeah play around with 1.5 and RSRD for abit get the feel of the game then move up the more advanced mods they are alot tougher.

Most of the mods are built for version 1.5. That's the U-Boat expansion. So, you do need the U-Boat expansion even if you're only going to run the American campaign.

I run TMO, RSRDC, OTC(Optical Targeting Correction), and Traveller's Mod.

So you're a SH3 GWX Veteran? Then download the Trigger Maru mod. If you want accurate battles and convoys you should download the Run Silent Run Deep Campaign mod that goes with it.

I have taken this mod out " Real Environment mod" it really messes with the weather.

High seas and fog all the way up to the Luzon Straits and beyond.

The weather has not changed since I started the game.

It does not look good either.

I had to take 3 merchants out close in with the deck gun in fog at minimum elevation.

All 3 were originally set up for a torpedo attack.

I could see them all but the periscope would not lock on with the sea swirling over the top.

Now what a difference with this mod out, much more natural looking weather that you would expect to see.

Try this one.

Thanks guys. Good info! I decided to go with RSRD and the Improved Enviroments mod for now as I haven't played a sub sim in quite a few years.

Quick question though. I took some hits from a destroyer and crash dived. Was able to survive and repair my boat at 180ft while the destroyers depth charged me. Everything was repaired and was able to surface a while later but my diesels won't work, even though they don't come up as destroyed or even damaged anymore. Would anything else effect my propulsion? I noticed that my hydraulic pump and main pump is red, but not showing damaged. I can't remember if the little pictures were always red or if it means destroyed.

And that said, if i can't get the diesels going, is there a way out of the patrol or is that the end? i am a ways from a friendly port.

Thanks!!:)

If they..

Will run enough to charge your batteries crawl to port that way. come up charge go back down and repeat. I have had to do that when running on fumes to refuel. But if they want run at all and you are actively telling your damage control team to fix them then yeah you may need to reload to last save.... Its happened to all of us.

I know its not REAL but I try and save after or before each patrol spot incase I do something stupid like take on a merchant with deckguns and forgot to look and see if he had some himself.

Thanks Den0, the mod needs to be compatible with "Websters GFO"

for new players
RFB_2.0 .................................... (Real Fleet Boat)
RFB_2.0_Patch_23April2010
RSRDC_RFB_V575 .................... (Run Silent Run Deep Campaign)
RSRDC_RFBV5xx_Patch1

This provides many improvements with only four mods. RFB (Real Fleet Boat) aims to achieve the most realistic gameplay and changes many elements. RSRDC (Run Silent Run Deep Campaign) changes shipping traffic and missions to historical volume/pattern. Stock has excessive traffic and isn't well configured.

Also, when you install and enable these mods (using JSGME), you should start a new career, and avoid experimenting with a lot of mods within this career. Playing 3 card Monty with mods will likely make for problems.

As said before, you need SH4 v1.5 (with U-boat missions) to use these, or most other mods. Ideally, I would get the 'Gold Edition'. It has all the patches and the game one one disc.
