Riddle.... what happened here...

....suggestions...?

I see blue sunken ship markers. The Gneisenau and Scharnhorst took on a convoy escorted by battleships and lost? But not before taking a few merchants down with them? :hmmm:

Not exactly - it is taken from a GWX 3.0 single mission scenario.

Definitely a convoy battle
Heavy allied ship losses suggest German surface units involved.

I think this is Convoy JW55B

Scharnhort and a destroyer group sortied from Norway to attack an allied convoy to Russia. Your are U-277, part of U-boatgroup EISENBART, vectored in to help.

That is correct, Raptor.

Originally, Scharnhorst was driven off by 3 RN cruisers - KGV with a task force was laying low in the background in expectation of the German raid. The German destroyers split early as the weather was too bad for them.

I recommend this scenario, there is lot of entertainment if one looks up above the surface. Scharnhorst is impressive! This time a certain U-boat sank the RN cruisers as Scharnhorst was arriving so he got a free ride through the convoy. What a massacre! He wasn't undamaged, though, dozens of merchants gave him all they had from all directions.

Eventually, he disappeared southwards as a message arrived informing that KGV was arriving from south-west.

Below: Scharnhorst approaching the convoy

Below: Wading through the convoy

Below: Going home - hopefully....In Altafjord Tirpitz was waiting
