Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs dies aged 84

Quote:

British criminal Ronnie Biggs, who took part in the 1963 Great Train Robbery, has died aged 84, his spokeswoman has confirmed.

Biggs was part of the gang which escaped with £2.6m from the Glasgow to London mail train on 8 August 1963.

He was given a 30-year sentence but escaped from Wandsworth prison in 1965.

In 2001, he returned to the UK seeking medical help but was sent to prison. He was released on compassionate grounds in 2009 after contracting pneumonia.

I've just had a thought...

If Ronnie Biggs had been robbing today,

He could have stopped that train by bunging a few leaves on the track....:03:

:haha:

Hard to tell what to make of Biggs, part of me admires the planning and audacity that went into the robbery, but the other part remembers Jack Mills, even if that wasn't actually Biggs that hit him.
It is odd how Biggs got much of the limelight from the robbery, most likely through his exploitation of media, whilst the death of Bruce Reynolds earlier this year was mostly unreported.

EDIT: Got to admire the timing too, there's a program on tonight about the Robbery IIRC.

Part 1 of 2. From the robbers' point of view. Part two tomorrow (Thurs.) at the same time and place with the police perspective.
