Blimp chasing me chasing ships
So this is a first for me...
It's mid Oct '43 and I'm off the Carolina coast. It's daytime nice weather and I'm on the surface running full speed to overtake a pair of small freighters. I intend to use deckgun when I get into range. All of a sudden I get the "Aircraft spotted!" alarm. Before I crash dive I look so see what it is. A "K ship" blimp bearing 150degrees is trying to overtake me! So I do the math... Looks like I'll be in decent gun range of the ships with at least 15 minutes before I have to really worry about the Blimp. I order... Continue on the surface flank speed! In the end... I'm slipping below periscope depth enjoying final views of two burning sinking ships and an angry blimp about 5 minutes too late to prevent my work.... Take us down to 80 meters 30 degrees port on the rudder.... Our work here is done! Radian |
That would have made some great screenshots!

Even when on the conning tower it was "look forward" see the small ships in the distance. Look almost straight back. See a blimp as a ball low over the horizon. I sank both ships from behind so I never passed them to get them between me and the blimp.... AND the blimp did not get in range to fire on me before I submerged. Photo opportunity lost... oh well. Those Blimps are hard to take down. I tried that once, never again.

All these years, I have never seen one. Very cool report!

They are indeed very hard to bring down. http://i40.tinypic.com/2iu2fco.jpg |
Yes, they are hard to kill! I encountered one while hunting for tankers between Cancun and Cuba. A random rain squall showed up, so I dove. Thanks to the Blimp, I heard 3 large tankers coming right for me. In a way he helped me sink three tankers. :haha:
