Quick German translation

Can somebody German speaking, please, translate for me something along these lines:

"U-boat Aces"
"Top Commanders"
"Top Aces"
"Best Commanders"

Something what would go on the top of a chalkboard keeping track of tonnage...

Thanks!

I'd suggest you PM Skybird and or Schroeder for something definitive.

"U-boat Aces" --- U-Boot Asse

"Top Commanders" --- Top - Kommandanten (that would be a todays translation) better: Spitzenkommandanten (traditional German) thats plural, singular would be Spitzenkommandant

"Top Aces" --- Top - Asse better Spitzenasse (like above) even better Spitzenkönner

"Best Commanders" --- Die besten Kommandanten, singular der beste Kommandant

It could be the literal translations Danasan gave. However, depending on the context, contemporary German maybe would prefer other terms as well. It depends. Also, nowadays there are many "Anglizismen" in spoken German as well. It is not unusual to use a label like "Top Ace" in German as well. Finally, it depends on "Best Commanders" means one best leader per category (referring to them as "Spitzenreiter in der Kategorie XYZ"), or just a group of good performers that all are above a given criterion with their performance (that would be referred to as "die Führenden", for example).

Terms like this probably meet your needs: Ass, Führende (female, or plural), Führender (male), beste X (f, pl), bester X (m). Or "Spitzenmann" (top man), but you would not use that in writing to mark a category, but in talking only - same limitation for Danasan's Spitzenkönner and Spitzenkommandant.

Assuming you want to run a chalkboard showing the most sucessfull U-Boat commanders you should go for "Erfolgreichste U-Boot Kommandanten".

It was a "Tonnagekrieg" (tonnage war), so it's all about "Versenkte Tonnage" (sunken tonnage).
Simply list the commanders with their monthly/over-all results.

A chalkboard would not list them according to their ranking.

A monthly report for Berlin would do so.

what Mittelwächter said. :yep:

Dönitz wouldn't have used "top" on his chalkboard, hmmmm... maybe Erich Topp

If you need something translating into bad language then I'd be happy to oblige :)

Thank you all for your replies. I have decided to go with

ERFOLGREICHSTE KOMMANDANTEN

NAME VERSENKTE TONNAGE
