A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to ...
I was on patrol in the Luzon Strait when the easter egg sailed past, too fast for me to catch up, but I sat on the surface and watch a Jap Destroyer engage it with all batteries!! It was so funny I was mesmerised and nearly forgot to dive.
The egg of course is the Flying Dutchman. :arrgh!: |
I have yet to see the Dutchman myself. I can imagine it would be quite a sight watching a destroyer try to sink her.(At the same time I would be trying to take a shot at the destroyer.)

Go to Luzon Straits, stay to right of island string ,half way north, and watch out for warship moving fast on your radar reports. Thats it.
I have a pic on my laptop, will post soonest. |
Captain Davey Jones:
The Dutchman on a non glow day. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=4902 A salute from the first Mate aboard the Dutchman. At night you can see others walking around her decks as well. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=4903 Captain Jones and I taking out a Japanese aircraft. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=4904 The Japanese want the Dutchman really bad. Destroyers, patrol craft and air strikes can not take her down. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=4901 The Japanese want us both awefully bad right now. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=4899 Waiting for the suns last rays: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=4900 AT WORLD'S END http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=4907 |

thought might be having just watched film in past 2 weeks on my laptop!! |
I've encountered her twice, but never have gotten as close to her as you have. She shows up on radar if memory serves, which is a trick in and of itself considering she is a wooden ship!
http://webpages.charter.net/joecorrado1/JollyRoger.jpg First time I saw her, I was just checking out a contact that I was certain would be a friendly ship- since I was in friendly waters at the time- I was quite surprised when my mystery ship turned out to be the Flying Dutchman! |

Due to the cannon, no doubt. :) |
or the ectoplasmic disturbance in the Force :arrgh!:

If you get close enough to her she will stop and if you are to close to her bow she will back away from you. Wooden ships are not hidden from radar. I was on a wooden hulled minesweeper in the Navy. While wood may not reflect as well as metal it's mass it still visible on radar.
By the way if you wish to take some photos of the Dutchman just to play around with them you can create a mission and simply add her near you at any place and any time on the map. |

I'm always learning something in this game. |
Since we still had plenty of metal in the engines and other parts we also ran with degaussers to help create a more neutral magnetic field in case we ran into the mag influenced detonators.
http://imageshack.com/a/img10/2681/e583.jpg She was finally decommisioned in 1989. The large odd cage near the bulkhead on the bow covers a large cable feed. We had a sea well in the bottom with a tethered sonar array to hunt for mines on the ocean bottom. I slept right next to the sea well hole one deck up from the bottom. It is not shown in this photo but we also had a large remote submersible to use in cable cutting and to help in removing mines. We were in a storm once heading to Fort Lauderdale and actully had boards ripped off the side from the wind and waves torquing the hull. |
