G7e torpedo partial cutaway
http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/5541/tnm.JPG
The forward section of the motor and its robust frames. The cable around the engine would probably connect to the batteries placed forward. http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/6960/3xbo.jpg Starting from the left the pendulum, the depth keeping mechanism, is visible with its linkages to the planes. In the center there is the drive shaft. To the right a power socket can be seen (whether it is for reacharging, heating or both I can't say however). http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/9048/b4al.jpg Compressed air flasks in all likelyhood. The G7e retained the same air driven gyro of the G7a. |
very good.
Where are these photos taken? |
Really shows how heavy duty these things were... can you imagine wrestling one of those out for maintenance? Yet they did it every day.

I've made the picture a bit smaller so it's easier for people to view.

That's the museum inside the Navy Yard at La Spezia. Access is on the side of the main entrance, towards the far left of this picture.
http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/4444/zvyy.jpg It is not the most active museum but there is a fair amount of interesting kit and fare is basically symbolic (less than a couple of € last time I was there). Among the highlights a side by side exposition of WW1 and WW2 era manned torpedoes, one of the container used for the 1941 raid on Alexandria and recovered from the sunken Scirč, a collection of 19th and 20th century small to medium caliber naval artillery (such as this WW2 era submarine gun) . My favorite piece is the mini torpedo boat: http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/9002/m5nj.JPG http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/7811/8jha.jpg If you are interested in more modern warships there is also a beach shipyard not very far at Riva Trigoso http://imageshack.us/a/img15/3065/8pkz.jpg http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/9219/xbaw.jpg |
