Theory of the weekend would like to hear your answers
First off I need to thank JoeCorrado for helping me figure out how to get the mods up and running. :salute:. However after spending a few days deep sixing a few convoys with a Skipjack and Los Angeles boat it got me thinking. One of my all time favorite movies is Final Countdown with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen and I began to wonder between a Nimitz class carrier and a SSN which one would be able to be adapted once there advanced weapons had been used? could a Seawolf,Virginia, or Los Angeles class boat be adapted to use world war 2 area torpedos? Or would the Nimitz class carrier adapt better? So fire away captains I want to know your thoughts on this. :hmmm:

Nimitz Carrier by a longshot.
It'd take some work to make an SSN shoot old torpedoes that haven't been used in 70 years...and even back then some of them were old. The Nimitz just needs to change which aircraft are stored on board. They have cables...WW2 naval aircraft have hooks. It'd take little work to convert a Nimitz to WW2 aircraft compared to changing an SSN. |
The Nimitz class catapults would be far too powerful for WWII era airframes the cables would be far too strong as well.On top of that it is a purely fantasy proposition for a modern weapon of war to some how time travel or warp back in time anyway.
I would employ the nuclear free fall bombs on the carrier or the nuclear tipped cruise missiles on the SSN and solve the problem before I expended my stock of conventional weapons. Problem solved and while I was at it I will find a way to help the Russians kill Stalin and his cronies and set them free with the agreement that Russia not become an enemy of the United States. I would try and use the bombs against sizable troop formations to avoid civilian deaths as best as possible. Then I would have a laser beam that shoots from my hand because why not?No actually I would have the laser beam before I used the nukes here is why;I would go to Tojo and zap his ass with my laser beam hand and then the message is clear this dude can zap people with his hands holy Toledo we better do what he says.I would do the same to Hitler but with him I would set my hand laser to extra slow bake mode.If they did not end the war well then I use the nukes. The only downside with my plan that I can see is that this change in history might mean that the Japanese will as a result of the extra 10 decades of peace and proprietary will mean that they create Hello Kitty sooner than they did in this reality and that will cause some kind of unforeseeable problem that can not be solved via the use of hand lasers. |

But regarding the question in question, I may be quite biased but I'd go with the fast attack. The hardest part would be getting the torpedo and fire control systems to "talk" to each other. |
Besides at 30kts and a thousand feet of runway, would WWII aircraft even need a catapult?

Having used the Skipjack and Los Angeles mods, the biggest liability I find with these sleek, modern subs is the lack of a deck gun. So many Japanese merchant ships aren't even worth a whole torpedo.

An interesting discussion on this very topic
http://warships1discussionboards.yuk...l#.Uj4I0yS1dFQ Evidently the mods on that board have the same problems we have on this board -- posting in the proper forum. LoL |
Back then they relied as much on the carrier sailing with the wind in order to give the planes a 20~30 mph push.
The most important benefit of a modern ship would be its radar systems. You would be able to find the enemy with radar from several hundred miles way that only would allow you a huge advantage in every naval battle. |

I was under the impression because of the SALT treaties only Boomers had nukes now..:06: |
