Which escorts make you go "Oh Crap"

TMO is known for it's vicious escorts and while the average escort does not seem to be as tough in RSRD they can still give you a fit if catch you in shallow waters or calm seas. However, once in a while you run into skilled ones and certain classes of escorts are always a threat, mainly in later war when the better escorts appear. Certain classes definitely force me to be a bit more aware shall we say of escorts as they seem to have better sonar, crews, and plenty of depth charges.Just wondering how others feel about this.

For me, the ones I worry about most are

Matsu Class Destroyer Escort-Plenty of depth charges, top rate sonar and radar, they are tough.

Akizuki Destroyer(more like a light cruiser with plenty of depth charges)

Type C Escort "kaiboikan"(not to be confused with Type C Coastal Defense Vessel)

Akikaze Destroyer-Rare in the game but if you've tangled with one, they can lay out an impressive pattern.

Otori Torpedo Boat..not sure what makes them tough, perhaps have better sonar etc but even if set to a mediocre crew, they seem to be the A team, if they have more launchers etc would be even more of a threat.

Rest of escorts are of course a threat, but don't get as much notice.

Anything that detects me I go "Oh Crap!"

And the only Akikaze in the game is Bungo Pete...the elite destroyer. :timeout:

If the other escorts detect me, there's a good chance that I've messed up. :arrgh!:

Especially later in the war when the crews are better, the equipment is better, there is more of them, and strategies are better.
:gulp:

The Akikaze shows up in other places in my install, ive added few convoys here in there in areas that are lacking convoys that actually existed. Also added a few random convoys in some areas.Prob 4 or 5 Akikazes running around the pacific in my install, some have given me a fit before.

Oh yeah...definitely. I made it to 1944 in my last campaign and the first convoy killed me just like *snap* that.

4 or 5?

:o

Just reading that makes me eye the crash dive key...

yeah bungo isnt the only place to find the akikaze's ... I have seen them other areas as well but I seriously never do an oh crap at any of them. You just do what you do and hope your better at maneuvering than they are at detecting.

Red October1984 07-08-13 09:57 PM

I've never seen Akikaze's outside of Area 7.

Then again, I don't go up near Japan a whole lot. That might be an issue.

I really don't like those subchasers that patrol in the harbor while I'm raiding. There's usually just the one in Truk harbor that patrols around at night and pisses me off.

Are you sure 'Bungo Pete' is so good? I mean, does he ever actually kill you or is it a 'circle-running torpedo'? :hmmm:

Armistead 07-08-13 11:17 PM

The Matsu is a mean cookie with all it's K and Y guns, plus double rolloffs.

The only time I've ever had a circle running torpedo is the acoustic torpedoes in SH3.

Bungo Pete is good....besides...torpedoes don't run at 250 feet. :03:

You saw Run Silent, Run Deep... :)

Bungo Pete is a product of TMO, not RSRD. However, RSRD has a generic elite escort that is a mean cookie, think it also has 8 Y guns, but it would be rare if you ran across one.

The hardest time I have with RSRD is 43 and 44, many of the escorts are set to veteran, but I adjusted many to elite. Try fighting 6 Type C's at once in Formosa in shallow water. It's amazing how well they hunt you, coming in from all angles at elite settings. I've even had 3 coming in throwing charges at once

We were talking about the one from the movie Run Silent, Run Deep.

I was kinda talking about both. :hmmm:

Along with Bungo Pete there's also that converted US destroyer...I forget what it's called.

It's like Patrol Boat 102 or something. :hmmm:

Whatever the number, it's frickin relentless. :o

I ran into it once...only once...and I will definitely steer clear of it if I run into it again.

EDIT: That wasn't even my worst experience with depth charges! The worst experience came from a lucky shot from a shore battery and a subchaser.
