71 years ago convoy PQ 17 set up from Hvalfirđi, Iceland to Arkangelsk Russia.
24 ships of 35 were sunk, 11 ships made it to Russia with 64.000 tons of shipping.

IIRC when the order to scatter was given, his ship returned to home waters and joined the formation of the next convoy but I certainly remember him telling me he heard the exchange of heavy gunfire.

Excellent book - I read it when I was about 10 years old and loved it. German battle plans, ship movements, and the fate of each merchantman - it's all there. Shocking just how poor the decision making was at the top - he reveals everything, and spares nobody's reputation.

sounds like my kind of book will have to order it next paycheck

flag4 07-08-13 08:01 AM

...I'd like to read it too. He's a controversial historian. Respected by some, loathed by others.
