Well he is 89 years old. He was Defence minister from 1963 to 1967. Not yesterday. Since losing the Liberal leadership race to Trudeau in 1968 he has been a bit of a political renegade. He ran for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party in 1976. In 1997, Hellyer formed his own party, the Canadian Action Party. Pretty much on the fringe of Canadian politics for a while.
