Question about attack from tight angle

Hello I have a question about what to do when one spot a convoy or a ship that is far away and heading away from you i.e. giving you an AoB between 160 Port and 160 Starboard. If you dive straight away you are gonna miss them cos they are quicker than an old U-Boat submerged. SO I thought maybe it's the case to get a bit nearer on the surface and then dive.... but when exactly it's better to do so to avoid detection? Or is it just better to forget to attack a convoy with these hadings/courses?
Thanks for your help!

I stay with it undetected long enough to plot its course and then do a loop around on the surface far enough away to remain undetected, then you can position yourself ahead of the convoy in a far better position to attack.

Bert.

bertieck476 reply is, I believe, standard procedure for most of us, as it was for real crews. In game, and because I am sometimes impatient, if I have enough torpedo spares, I try to to hit it's stern in an atempt to blow off the propelers which will leave my intended target unable to move. Then while submerged I position my sub for a good AoB shot.

Shots from behind ships are difficult, usually work only for magnetic eels under the keel, and they are SO easy to dodge. Shadow the convoy from afar on surface. Overtake, engage. Good hunting!

I agree! Better to shadow the convoy. It might take several hours to catch up and overtake the convoy, but gives you a better chance of attacking it when you are in a better position to do so. Just make sure you keep enough distance away from being detected.
