FILM: Below. using drag chains..?
..im watching the 'very good so far' film Below made in 2002.
in the film the Destroyers are using drag chains with vicious anchor-like grappling hooks on them to drag for subs. I have never heard of this before - its an awesome idea if its real and it looks terrific in the film. is this a real technique for catching out subs in shallow water? its a psychological-horror thriller set in 1943 in the Atlantic. its starts off on an American sub. the sets are great and a terrifying depth charging to start with. id recommend this film - though its not over yet. |
yup
First used in WW1 but also used by Japan in WW2, I believe. Shallow waters only.

It was in War in the Boats: My WW2 Submarine Battles
The Japanese used it and actually hooked the USS Crevalle. |
