Shodan: The scariest search engine on the Internet

Google knows everything? That may be true, but, it has a competitor for finding information!
Meet Shodan, the 'dark' Google.

Quote:

Unlike Google, which crawls the Web looking for websites, Shodan navigates the Internet's back channels. It's a kind of 'dark' Google, looking for the servers, webcams, printers, routers and all the other stuff that is connected to and makes up the Internet. (Shodan's site was slow to load Monday following the publication of this story.) Shodan runs 24/7 and collects information on about 500 million connected devices and services each month. It's stunning what can be found with a simple search on Shodan.

I'd rather not tempt fate and rely on my security programmes.

"Look at you, hacker. A pathetic creature of meat and bone. Panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect immortal machine?"

AVGWarhawk 04-10-13 08:43 AM

"I can't do that Dave."

Seriously? Another fear mongering, click bait article.

There has been services like this for a LONG time, both legitimate, and illegitimate (ISPs do it, and here are shady people on hacking forums offering this kind of service).

Hell, you can build up your own database, by using nmap: http://nmap.org

That reminds jim, your M.I.5 Internet Security subscription has gone up £500. You have three days to renew or we pull the plug. :03:

No, I just use it to make pancakes.

Wait, what?

Definitely an interesting thing really but not really that unsurprising, I mean the internet is massive, absolutely massive and the stuff you see on a daily basis and the stuff shown on search engines like google is just the teensy tip of the gargantuan iceburg that is the internet. Just look up Deep Web sometime and you start to realize how massive this beast humanity has created is, and how stupid it sounds when governments and companies think they can control it.
