Yeah, I remember there was a bug in it's floating point processor. Never had that myself though. I was a little later to the party.

Why was the successor of the 486 not called 586? Because on the new processor 486 + 100 resulted in 485,9999967314.
:O:

Was a joke back then.:D

Hey, I do remember seeing some poster ads of the 586. Well just one, but it was official.
Happy birthday pentium!

Boy, do I miss the days when a CPU could be identified by a simple number, ie Pentium II 350... :-?

nikimcbee 03-24-13 09:25 AM

What, you guys don't like AMD's numbering system?:haha:

IIRC, the bug only affected certain high-end mathematical calculations and /or functions. I also seem to remember it took a verry intense, deep bit of digging by some very advanced mathematician-types to find the bug. I remember this because an Apple-proselyte I once worked with used this "flaw" as leverage in his argument that the company we worked for should dump PCs and go all Apple. The idea was shot down once it was noted, unless you were doing advanced physics, or some like, the possibilty of being affected by the bug was negligible...

<O>
