One does wonder. I do have to say though, my only family that spent time a elderly home was treated very well.

I've seen something similar before, but it's still a good point. :sunny:

Same can be said in the UK and most of Europe I suspect.

Wolferz 03-21-13 01:26 PM

The security fencing companies

Will make a killing erecting razor wire around all the nursing homes.
Which, for all intents and purposes are already prisons for the elderly. The doors are rigged with alarms that are activated by the wristbands they place on the residents to prevent their escape.

Aye, so sadly true. There's little care in care homes these days, all run for profit. :nope:

Armistead 03-21-13 02:05 PM

Certainly when it comes to state run prisons versus nursing home, I have to agree with the statement.

Here's the worst part. In Lexington, Ky., where I worked as a firefighter, we have a federal prison. It is called The Federal Medical Center. It is a nursing home for federal prisons. With a couple exceptions for high dollar nursing homes, and the VA nursing home in Lexington, I have said, and will repeat that The Federal Medical Center is the best nursing home in Lexington. Most nursing homes are awful. I shudder the idea that a family member may some day have to go to one.

I inspected and maintained fire alarm systems in the Lexington area nursing homes back in the late 90's. Most were decent. Some outright deplorable. I shudder at the idea of putting a family member in one too. Thank the maker that my father and mother passed before that became needed.

A sad fact of life I suppose but one which can only be rectified by government intervention and funding.

Ducimus 03-21-13 03:39 PM

I've seen the inside of an old folks home once. I forgot why i was there, but I remember leaving disgusted and promised my parents I would never put them in one.

To be fair, my sister worked in a nursing home for quite some time. The only thing she said was family members did not make enough visits. Their elderly moms/dads, etc were left wallow. Everyone in her facility was treated with respect and dignity. Eventually she quit because each week one of the patients would pass away. Often these folks befriended her. Let's face it, you see them everyday. It became depressing for her knowing the folks will pass on at any given moment.

This is why you need to be nice to your children -- they will choose which nursing home to stash you. :yep:

Par for the course.....unfortunately.

The people who work in nursing homes and hospice have my respect. That can not be a fun place to work. Often there is only one outcome and that can be depressing when you become close to a resident or patient. :yep:
