Chavez has died

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-21679053

A divisive, problematic and controversial figure. There's gonna be two very different versions of him being trumpeted for a while now - one as some sort of angelic martyr of the people (no doubt, secretly assassinated by the US, as some will loudly proclaim) and another as this evil socialist dictator who has oppressed his own people and spat on human rights. I doubt a fair assessment of his actual role will be available for a while thanks to that.

Either way, having been a center of Latin American left-wing politics for the last few years, it will be interesting to see what effect Chavez' death will have on the region. He did build up a bit of a cult of personality around himself, and now that the person is gone, the structure behind the persona will probably struggle to redefine itself.

Seems like this has been coming for a while. Hate Chavez or not, you gotta hate cancer at the least. People in his situation rarely recover as miraculously as his PR aides were keen to claim, and I am really not surprised at today's news.

Be interesting to see if the media barons take over the country again.

I remember a couple of years ago when Pat Robertson of CBN shocked everyone by saying,
"Maybe someone ought to take him out"

"each person is appointed a time to die and then the judgement"

I have nothing to do with that level of justice ...

CIA conspiracy wagon in five...four...three...

Ah well, I doubt there'll be many in the western world who will mourn his passing, the socialist social club will probably go into mourning but no-one really cares about them.

Now, I guess that just leaves Dinnerjacket and Little Kim as the outspoken anti-westerners of the world, even Mugabe hasn't said much about anything lately...probably trying to keep quiet in case someone farts near his economy and pushes it off the cliff edge it's perched on.

Now the more interesting question is...what's going to happen to Venezuela? One would have thought that someone would have put in place a handover regime, sensing this might be coming, but at the same time, if someone did that and Chavez recovered, then they'd probably be shot for planning to overthrow him. Time will tell, however it's pretty likely that whatever happens, the average people of Venezuela will still get screwed over.

Be careful, if you run out of villains there will be no justification left for wars :D

And what about Super-Heros ? They can't make a living helping old woman crossing the road, do they ?

But if it can help, I agree to be the next vilain-axe-of-evil-terrorist... If I get 72 virgins when I die.

New elections in a month. I think Capriles stands a good chance of getting elected this time, if he runs again.

Privatization is a neoliberal and imperialist plan. Health can’t be privatized because it is a fundamental human right, nor can education, water, electricity and other public services. They can’t be surrendered to private capital that denies the people from their rights.
RIP Hugo.
