SimCity: Land of Plenty

Ok, I'm getting this one. Sounds pretty good, and it has been a while since I played a sims game. :)

Anyone want to be my neighbor? :shucks:

reignofdeath 03-05-13 08:26 AM

I would like too but the always online is a turnoff for me... and they really crushed the size you could go on these cities. I want to be able to build a megatropolis, not a bustling town. But I wish you luck Neal! And please do post a review for us will you!?

I will wait until reviews come in, and inevitable bugs are fixed.

Yeah, the online thing is no biggee for me, but no doubt there will be server issues for a few weeks. I see that the city sizes are smaller than before but I think the amount of micromanagement details that are available will make up for it: 30:40 and that is really appealing to me. I will know more after I play it.

Gamers Line Up To Play SimCity…

Quote:

Hey, want to play the freshly US-released SimCity? Well, stand in
line. As Total Biscuit reveals (video below), there are already 30 minute
queues. And this is just for those who’ve stayed up past midnight to be able
to play. In just one country.
How's that always online DRM that will be cracked like the rest working for your legit customers EA?

I am genuinely upset with SimCity 5. Probably my favourite genre of game being slowly dialed back in scope, functionality and witnessing EA pull the usual bitsize DLC rippoff game has pissed me off no end. :shifty:

I'm being kind of cowardly on this one and having a wait-and-see attitude. If the response from those who have played it is good, then I will jump in too. The always online DRM is not a problem, as I have FIOS and am always online anyway.

Same really, although I'm with danlisa in being disappointed that the area scale for construction is so small. I can see the point in having to play a more conservative game in being sure where to put things, but that counteracts the real life sprawl and central redevelopment of cities.

Still, we shall see, I'll be watching TBs review later, and doing some more reading. :hmm2:

I've been playing simcity since the original (2000 and 4 were my most favorites, I skipped societies). I don't think I will be going anywhere near this one.

I am so sick to death of these DRM schemes and pushing online stuff on a game that doesn't need to be online. I am frankly just about fed up with the entire gaming industry in general.

Sailor Steve 03-05-13 11:21 PM

I loved the original SimCity. I played 2000 and was frustrated, mainly because I wasn't much good at it. I never got the later versions. This one looks really good, but that online thing is a true game-killer for me. They won't get my money.

On the other hand, maybe I'll pick up a cheap copy of CS4. :sunny:

I'm in your thread, posting for absolutely no reason whatsoever. :shifty:

I feel with Neon. These DRM schemes have not so much to do with fighting piracy, but to dry out the second hand market for games. You see the same with e-readers and e-books: to sell no right of possession but a limited licence to use only, is aimed against selling your used e-books on a second hand market.

In the US, a platform for used mp3 has opened some time ago. In Europe we lagg behind. However, both in Europe and the US court challenges aginst Amazon and others have been filed in a an attempt to upgrade the legal rights of consumers to actually own what they pay for. And in Germany, e_books are not even that much heaper than hardcopy books anyway (we have a so-called Buchpreisbindung here, hardcopy books must cost the same price in all shops over here).

On SC, I do not play it anymore, but the series is a great game. Played the original 25 years ago or so. Then SC2000 on playstation. Next SC3, SC3 Deutschland, and SC4 with Rush Hour. Loved it. Also love the soundtracks, I have them on CD, all of 3 and 4, and play them not that rarely on my HiFi or in the kitchen.

Charming games! :yeah:

Arclight 03-06-13 09:15 AM

Played these games so much, lots of fond memories attached to the first one in particular (the NES version though, same base game but a little Nintendo flavor mixed in, Bowser thrashing your city as a disaster for example).

The idea of a new one was exiting at first... I'm just not happy with Origin. I got "forced" into Steam, which I've come to accept and even appreciate on some levels. But I don't need a clone of that; I don't see myself trying this as long as it comes with that restriction, especially with the latest reports of it having "a bit of a wobbly".

My daughters love the Sims series. The spend more time constructing and furnishing the sim house than anything else.

I agree. EA is a company that I have alot of complaints with on the PC and console side. On the PC side they ruin games when acting as publisher, always online is now always required, and they release games with DLC for sale on the first day. Like in the WTF review posted above.... They have a billboard on the main page that is a DLC link.... with DLC for sale on/before the release date.

The only plus side to this version of Sim City, in my eyes, is the ability to play online with others and manage cities together. That said.... I know nobody that would actually be interested in doing that all the time, outside one clanmate. So our city would just go downhill. I'd like to manage a huge city and manage the regions like in old versions and without DRM.
