It works in mine: Win 7 Ultimate x64.

I purposefully chose not to install the game in the default location, but in a custom folder: C:\games\Dangerous Waters. Windows Vista/7/8 don't like it when files are modified in the Program Files folder. (i.e. saving into the Scenario folder.)

It may also be that Dangerous Waters doesn't immediately recognise widescreen resolutions. I have my Nvidia config panel scale the screen to meet DW's max resolution of 1280x1024.

Probably a long shot and I guess you might know this already, but I had to disable my video card's anti-aliasing in the ati control panel to get the game to run. I'm using Vista 64, and yeah, it doesn't like being put in 'program files' either.

There's no solution that I know of. I just tried again following a clean installation of Windows 8 x64 Enterprise:
- Program files were copied to a separate directory
- Antialiasing was disabled
- The screen resolution was set to 1280 x 1024 prior to attempting program start
- The program was run in Windows XP and also in Windows 7 compatibility mode

I've gone back to Windows 7 x64 until this issue (if ever) is resolved.

I have windows 8 on my laptop and after some effort, I got TMO to run [the stock game loaded and ran ok from the start]. The only problem I have is that periodically the game minimises itself, just as if I'd alt-tabbed out. Similar stuff happens with other applications. suddenly the window I'm working in isn't the active one any more - Anybody know what this is about? and how do I stop it? It's a minor annoyance, but I'd still like to be rid of it

Is there no compatibility mode in win8? If its anywhere it would be in the files properties.

You are the first person i hear who get DW under Win8 running...

I gave up trying to get Dangerous Waters to run in Windows 8, with immediate crashes to desktop following installation and huge dump files remaining that I didn't even try to decipher. Rather than return to Windows 7, I simply installed CrossOver for Mac (I have a dual-boot system with OS X and Windows 8 in Boot Camp) to allow running the program in a virtual Windows XP environment.

Could you please explain what you did?

Anyway, my situation is as follows, I'am running a dual boot system with Windows 8 and Fedora 18 and basically every game I play from time to time (Hearts of Iron, Rising Storm, Silent Hunter Series, ...) runs fine with Windows 8, except Dangerous Waters, which is sadly one of my favorites. However, I don't want to downgrade to Windows 7, so I tried two things:

1. Run Dangerous Waters in Virtual Box w/ Windows XP installed in it. I activated Direct3D support (you have to boot the XP guest in safe mode in order to do this), installed Dangerous Waters and I got it to run, albeit terribly slow (~20 fps at max), which I expected. My Hardware is a Core i7 2600k, 8gb Ram and a AMD HD6950 Card. So if you can live with a low framerate (which I can't) or have stronger hardware, you can certainly try that approach, but don't expect too much.

2. I mentioned the Fedora 18 dualboot, so I decided to give it a shot with Linux and Wine. I know this might not be an alternative for people that don't have a dual boot system running and aren't willing to do a downgrade to Windows 7 (let alone installing a whole new OS ;)), but maybe this helps the one or another. So what I did:

1. Installed Wine from the package manager (eg. basically yum install wine)
2. Installed Steam with wine (worked out of the box)
3. Started Steam with wine, but no fonts where visible. Started Steam with wine Steam.exe -no-dwrite and fonts where there and crystal clear.
4. Installed Dangerous Waters normally through Steam and started it. And wow, *everything* worked out of the box (though I haven't tested multiplayer).

I spent at least 2-3 Hours for the Virtualbox approach and the Performance and overall experience was abysmal, the Fedora solution took me about 30 minutes, the most time went for downloading Dangerous Waters through steam. I tested this on my not-so-new Sandy Bridge Thinkpad with HD3000 and got ~40fps on insane setting and 90 otherwise, so the performance here is much, much better than in Virtualbox where I achieved 20fps with much better hardware.

So I you have a Linux Box around or a dual boot system, try it with Wine, it worked basically out of the box for me. Anyway, If there is a Win8 Solution, let me know, would be a little bit more comfortable ;)

TMO sounds like a mod for Silent Hunter 4. So I think in_vino_vomitus replied in the wrong forum section.

Thanks for letting us know...that sounds promising. Are there any issues when you install Fedora after Win8 (Dual Boot Manager) and does also the sound work fine?

I had never used windows 8 yet.

No joy here either. Dangerous Waters ran perfectly fine on my Windows 7 machine. On my new Windows 8 computer it just crashes immediately, regardless of which compatibility settings I try.

I've written an email to inquiries@sonalysts.com, asking about the possibility of a future Windows 8 compatibility update but I'm not hopeful (haven't received a reply yet, though). :(
