Mod enabler not woking in my installation of SH3

I am having problems with the mod enabler. An error message when attempting to load a mod, something to the effect of not being able to write the files. Then I cannot close the mod enabler- it has to be shut down using Task Manager.

Do these symptoms make sense to anyone?

Never come across this before.

Uninstall the mod enabler and download it again.

The final version is here:

I'm speculating that you have Windows Vista, 7 or 8. And the game is installed into the Program Files folder by default. Reinstall the game somewhere else (that is not in Program Files), like c:\games\SilentHunterIII. And try again.

It could also sound like not enough diskspace on your drive. JSGME makes a backup in a hidden location, of whatever is overwritten.

Why is Programes File dodgy. I have 7 and as of yet have never encounterd problems?

As a much more knowledgable friend of mine told me, Microsoft designed Program Files to be the place where all of their own programs go, and was not originally meant for others to use. Apparently with nwer versions of Windows they've made it more resistant to use by other companies, and Program Files apparently doesn't like working with other programs.

I have no idea if that's true or not, but that is what I was told.

Thanks, this is what I will try. First the replacement, then reinstalling the game, if needed. I'll report back tomorrow, if not sooner.

Windows checks if files are modified or saved into this folder structure. If it happens it tries to ask for administrator acceptance via User Account Control, and temporarily locks up your system until that has happened. If your account is an administrator then all you need to do is press the acknowlegde button that pops up. If yours isn't then you have to go through the selection of a account with adminstrative rights, and provide the password.

Unfortunately, some programms (like SH3 that was developed before Vista) do not expect this to happen. With full screen games you might not even notice it. When a timer runs out to provide the administator consent the game is refused in what it wanted to do. And so it could give up and crash/shutdown itself for lack of a more intelligent thing to do.

You could turn off UAC, but you could also avoid Program Files for anything that tries to modify files in it's own folder. (like JSGME or SH3 Commander in SH3 base-folder)

Some problems I have encountered is with saves for the *.mep file that was corrupted. You never know until file investigations begin. The filename.mep file is located in your documents folder. The mod enabler program creates *.mep file name extensions.

Send me private message with the following requests, and I will see what I can do. If I find the result, may I post it in this thread?

I need the *.mep file which does not work
Operating system being used.
Type exactly what the error message is.

Here is what happens when I try to add a mod. It won't close at this point either.

As I suspected. You can most likely solve this problem by re-installing the game not in Program Files (x86).

Your system is unusual though, in that your Program Files is on the F: drive, rather than the regular C: drive.

EDIT: But there is also newer version of JSGME than that you are using (probably came with GWX3):

I don't have any .mep file on my system. So I am curious about what you are talking about.

...is F:\Programme..an external drive?

what is F drive anyway?

Nothing wrong with installing it on "F" drive. I have it installed on "R" drive. I have about 6 partitions on 2 physical hardrives for various reasons.

Jones Generic mod enabler (JSGME) creates *yourfilename save.mep extensions. What kind of operating system, Pisces? For Win 7 - C:\Users\your login name\Documents; XP - C:\Documents and Settings\your login name\Documents.

I would suggest to use http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=3951 instead of http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=3900 for all concerned. Same version but has the user's guide included in pdf form, too.
