What would YOU do?

Thought it would be interesting to get peoples opinions on this scenario:

Large Convoy, clear day mid 1940:

Just off Lowestoft:

It gets better, in 18m of water:

Fully loaded in my TypeIIA:

Suicide? I'm so tempted but I can kind of see how its going to turn out... :arrgh!:

Oh, and I'm strictly adhering to D.I.D rules.

So, what would YOU do?

Get in there, watch for mines though. If your going to go, go in style.

Once bitten twice shy, that was my previous patrol. Killed my Weapons officer, destroyed my batteries, limped back to base on the surface.

Could say I'm on life number 9 now...

My experience tells me to take a few pot shots from long range and head for deeper water the minute the fish leave the tubes.

if you manage to get one or two you up your tonnage and send Winston a message that his ships arent safe anywhere

Take calculated risks.

Suicide plenty of war left out there but if you wanted to attack Id say lie in front of them and hit the front ships then move through the convoy so those destroyers searching for you have to dodge ships

Still suicide for me though, I'm terrible at dodging destroyers. Especially when in 18 meters of water

Newbie question - What is D.I.D?

HundertzehnGustav 01-15-13 03:47 AM

The only way i would shoot - if this is not possible, go home, and do so quietly.

move to the sea side of the convoy.
get away from their "street" at least 3000 metres off the main line.
(DDs presume you shot from 900 - 1100 metres and will look there)
lie in front of them.
as they pass your nose, fire a set of medium speed surface runners at the biggest fatso you can find.
If there is no really major cargo, go try 3 fast shots at smaller ones, one per target.

lie in wait to finish targets off.

TwoGamers 01-15-13 03:53 AM

Floppy rat D.I.D is dead is dead meaning once you die it's over you delete the save and start again. Some players use SH3 commander and just start from the point they died at as a new commander.

flag4 01-15-13 12:18 PM

...if theres time. you could follow them untill dark, finding out where the destroyers are then slip in amongst them and take your pick.
then comes the 'But....'

VONHARRIS 01-15-13 12:41 PM

18m depth is a death wish.
If you get spotted it is all over.

I would have fire all 3 tubes from a safe distance and head away when the last torpedo had left its tube.

I think flag4 has the best advice. Shadow and gather information on escorts and then try a night surface attack. This early in the war, you should be able to pull it off. That is one of the most satisfying accomplishments in SH3, especially when you don't even have to dive to escape and the escorts are throwing starshells out and searching for you in the totally wrong spot. :arrgh!:

I think a daylight submerged attack in that shallow of water borders on suicide against an escorted convoy, even early war.
Maybe if there was only one escort and you get in prime position on the seaward side, you might be able to pull off a submerged attack. Shoot and run for deeper water and then become a quiet hole in the water when the escort comes sniffing around looking for some revenge. Type II's are pretty good at that.

I don't think anyone would fault you if you let this convoy go and waited on easier pickings. It's gonna be a long war.

:)
