Sad, burning churches...

In our small rural town nuts have taken to burning churches, one last night, one tonight.....I'm rather agnostic, but I do believe Karma's a bitch.

Yea this was a big thing in Norway back in the nineties. Had a direct connection to the Black metal music scene. Not sure what the motivation is in your part of the world.

I am all for keeping churches intact.
A nonbeliever here too, yet: Churches and Churchbells are a testimony, a proof of Human efforts and intelligence. (art, construction, certain traditions)
and therefor Churches, especially old ones are not to be torn down, but their Churchbells to kept running, rining and indication the time throughout the day.

Destruction is and remains destruction. Anyone destroying things cannot be a constructive member of the society, can they?

The Church is a meeting place for like minded people. So is the bar. I'm not a drinker/bar hopper. Does not mean they should burn to the ground. I'm not certain what jollies one gets from burning a church, pushing over headstones, spray painting on a synagogue, stealing a Nativity figurine, swiping money for a offering box in a church or just have an overall distaste for a structure. I do know these activities have gone of for decades. The more things change the more they remain the same.

Can't help but think of the times that that has happened with people seeking refuge inside. *shudders*

Not a big believer in organised religion myself, but I do love the architecture of churches and cathedrals. Something quite awe inspiring about the high roofs and beams.

Heck, they got guards right now at our one church that Patrick Henry was a member, solid wood, beautiful old church. They do Christmas mass in it midnight Christmas Eve, we go every year for the singing and history.....Guess Henry was here before the war broke out. His sons went to school here.

It's funny cause I am a believer but don't go to church. I'll be going tonight with the family. The last time I went was last Christmas eve.

Churches are usually more than just a place of worship. The older ones have a significant place in the history of a community. The number of weddings, christening/baptisms and funerals alone is reason for importance.

What ever the reason some people might have for destroying a symbol of faith it is a futile effort. I think about the bombings and burnings during the Civil Rights movement and how that just strengthen the resolve of those who believe their cause is just.

I'll never understand the mentality of someone who burns down a place of worship, regardless of whether they are a believer or not.

I don't understand the mentality of destroying anything, no matter what the cause.

Garion 12-24-12 11:34 AM

Well it IS a bit less extreme than burning people....

Cheers

Why can't they burn the Westboro Baptist Church down.

Hopefully with all its inbred members inside.

No joke here. And not apologizing.
