Have either of the megamods been updated in the last year?

I'm coming back to SH4 after a break (and a full system reformat) and looking to install a megamod. In the past, I've never really found much reason to love one more than the other, so I'm wondering if either has had any updates in the last year which would make it a better choice this time around.

Thanks

Either? There are five that I'm aware of.

most of the big mods had many revisions already in the past and havent had new version updates in over a year and "should" be considered as final versions until its advertised otherwise.

i say this because from the comments that i've read, the modders who created them are pretty satisfied with them as they are.

im glad to see FOTRS is planning a new update and while i havent done it yet i do have plans to give GFO an update at some point but nothing is definate on when that might happen.

I guess this is an indication of how far behind the times I am: I really only thought there were TMO and RFB.

Here is an expansion of this question: As I look through a lot of the available mods, it seems like many are designed to work with RFB + RSRDC, but very few mention compatibility with TMO + RSRDC or any other megamod for that matter. Is this to be taken as an indication that a lot of modders have gravitated towards RFB + RSRDC rather than the alternatives? I am fairly adept at shoehorning mods into other mods, but its been a long time since I've messed with the files in an SH4 folder, so I'm not super keen on picking a megamod that's going to force me to refresh my modding skills just to play with the mods I want...

This is simply my own opinion but i think people gravitate toward modding RSRD in particular due to the fact that its more singularly focused on the campaign etc.. leaving the Interface, most sounds and the environment to be changed with less impact on the existing mod... The others change all these aspects if i am not mistaken. Like webster said as well, most creators see these mods as finished... that being said, it would be hard for someone else try and improve what these guys have already done to be really honest. They are all pretty superb and when people do mod them it is usually for personal taste or ease of gaming (color changes to environment and replacing contact icons etc).

My problem is that I have a tendency to add a bunch of the non-included, yet still useful mods like SCAF, Easy AOB, or some of the modern subs to have some less realistic fun. While a lot of these do make efforts to be compatible with TMO and RFB, I'm still seeing a lot more "Designed using RFB + RSRDC" right now than TMO.

I see more mods designed for TMO, certainly more recent mods.

Maybe I'm just looking at the older versions of the mods I used to like? Seems like first posts don't get updated much anymore and there might be some updates buried in the pages of the thread.

TMO 2.5 was released almost 2yrs ago if i am not mistaken... The last RFB and OpMon were updated in 2010 it looks like, and RSRD and GFO in 2009.... I guess it has been a while... longer than i thought anyhow. Im almost 100% positive that they have been updated in the downloads section as well as wherever else they are posted to the most recent patches. I dont think you need to go digging or anything.

Sailor Steve 11-06-12 10:56 AM

I'm not sure of the status of the others, but TMO was the sole work of Ducimus, and he flatly refuses to work on mods anymore, due to experiences with his last attempt. There may be small mods designed to work with TMO, but don't expect to see a new update, ever.

to the question of RFB and TMO i think more people have gravitated to TMO and are not as keen on RFB. TMO is just a more refined and smoother running mod IMHO.

the thing with RSRDC is it was already a little old before the final versions of TMO and RFB so it was kinda just "tweaked" to keep up with some of the changes but many feel it would have been fantastic to get a truely updated version of RSRDC before the creator left it as finished but sadly that never happened.

a lot of mods dont really get into compatability until you dig into the mod description so it isnt as easy as it used to be to tell by the names if a mod is TMO compatable.

RFB has the destintion of NOT being other mod friendly and have constant CTD if non-compatable mods are added. mods that would work for it will usually NOT work without it so they are special made for RFB and therefore get an easy to identify name saying its a RFB mod.

like RFB, FOTRS is NOT other mod friendly and has its own built in campaign so RSRDC is not needed and should NOT be used with it. it is even more sensative to being altered in any way because it was designed to be a whole mod needing nothing else with it so very few mods will work with it and if you use that mod DONT use any mods with it unless they specifically say they are made for FOTRS

Thanks for the detailed info. I think based on this, I'll stick with the TMO + RSRDC for compatibility and game performance.

You know, that could explain a few things...
