World of Warships

Haven't seen this discussed yet. I know it's not ultra realistic, but I'm pretty excited about this game. Beta should start sometime early next year, and I'm super stoked for it.

They're doing a challenge right now on the main website for whoever can carve the best pumpkin gets a beta invite.

I am rather surprised this one hasn't gotten a bit more attention around here, it looks pretty good!

The guys who made it also made a game where if you turned your aircraft the wrong way, you would go into a spin :D So it depends what game mode you choose. You'd love simulator, Steve. It NEVER forgives errors.

Its gonna be pretty good I think, as a long time WoT player I have to say Wargaming has done pretty well with games like this.

Expect to see a lot of ship designs you never even heard of before. Wargaming are bloody amazing at digging up old documents and designs to use in their games.

I am a history buff as well, and a sim player too. There is only so much you can do with a computer simulation, especially if you are trying to capture the attention of today's typical gamer.

Here is a Youtube video someone uploaded of the closed beta, I still think it looks pretty good compared to some of the other stuff out there now.

That's not a WoW, it's Battlestations: Pacific

Ah, so it is, I should have known better than to trust a Youtube title.

And there's the rub. I'm not today's typical gamer, or any kind of gamer. I want to recreate the feel of actually being there, and the Silent Hunter series, Aces Of The Deep and Destroyer Command are the only things I've tried that even come close.

I agree that it is possible to get fairly close, unfortunately game companies would rather pump out mindless eye candy point and shoot crap because it is much cheaper than to develop a game that actually challenges a player to use more than reflex action brain synapses. The sad part is most of society today is perfectly happy to let someone else think for them.

I have been a gamer for almost 35 years now, and I probably will be till they day they plant me. I much prefer a well done simulation though, unfortunately those are becoming more rare. Most of my experience comes from flight sims like B-17, I did also love 688 Attack Sub and Wolfpack.

The last decade or so, my focus has gone a lot farther back than the Greatest Generation, and I have really come to appreciate the age of sail. There are some great story's and history there, both in people and ships.
