I miss Silent Hunter

I'm currently deployed and can't play. I used to spend countless hours playing SHIII -- roaming the Atlantic, sipping schnapps, listening to period music, sometimes with my baby on my lap.

I haven't played in about 3 years.

And I just read Clay Blair's "Silent Victory," which has me hankering to play when I get home in a few months.

But what should I play? Should I stick with SHIII or try IV or V? :06:

SH3+GWX In my opinion, a big shot

Herr-Berbunch 10-18-12 06:54 AM

All of them. :yep:

That way you'll find your favourite and it means we don't have to decide for you, they're all cheap enough now. Just make sure to mod them.

If you like the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO) (reading Silent Victory...), you can try SH4 with supermods - RSRDC (The Run Silent Run Deep Campaign is the best campaign in SH4 for PTO).

Also, you could read Clair Blair's "Hitler U-Boats War", and try SH3 or SH5 in the Atlantic...:03:

Best regards.

Fitzcarraldo :salute:

Ahoy BROJD
Good to have you back Brutha'. I will ditto Herr-Berbunch that you should try all. To elaborate a bit, play them all, make your desision but I would say have a campaign going in all three! The two you haven't played, SH4 and SH5 are not only worth trying out, it would be a shame if you didn't. All the games must be modded up and after you do, they are difficult to put down. I hope you play all three like myself. I have an ongoing campaign in all three going at any given time.
(PS: The eye candy in a modded SH5...you,ve just got to see this...:D)
Cheers and Good Hunting

And they're all very cheap these days.

Ah...the old "Which game..." question. It is pretty much up to personal preference and comfort with modding. If you want to play as the Americans, the choice is obvious. If you want to be the Germans, then preference comes to play. SH5 requires a tremendous amount of modding, so if you are not comfortable with that, it may not be an option for you. If I had to make a recommendation, I would say SH3 w/GWX and SH3 Commander.:know:

Download J'attendrai (Tornerail) to your iPod and play that when ever you feel down. :) Works for me and the KaLeun everytime. :salute:

I read all of Clay Blair's "Hitler's U-Boat War."

I am partial to the Atlantic, partly because I think it sets up an interesting campaign arc: Start early, when the ASW capabilities were weak, convoying was rare, and most U-Boats returned to base safely. Train your crew and yourself, because by the end of the war most sorties were suicide missions.

But in the Pacific, by the end of the war the Jap DD fleet was decimated and the hunting was easy.

Still, cruising the lovely Pacific sometimes seems nicer than weathering countless gales and fog in the North Sea and North Atlantic.

As much as I'd like to try all of them, between work, family (whom I haven't seen in months), and life, I hope I can have the time to really enjoy one of them.

I would say (Based on experience) SH5 with IRAI, OHII, Expanded Navies (Whoever made that deserves a medal) Equipment upgrade fixes, MFCM and MTNS.
This is just my experience with mods, however. You should look at sobers mega mod, it has most of the essential mods.

I just read Eugene FLUCKEY's Thunder Below.

So I think I'll try SH 4 a shot when I get home in a few weeks.

BROJD, you'll have something to look forward too when you get back on shore. And thank you for your service. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/GT182/usa2.gif

sh5, poor little sh5, you had a difficult birth, premature and didnt seem to have much chanse of holding on to life. But then several modhers came along and took you in to thier bosom and nursed you back to life. Even if your real parents abandoned you, left you for dead, you had several caring modhers instead. They made you strong with all the homemade nutricious food they made for you. Now you have grown into a fine product, worthy of the time i spend playing with you. :yeah:
