FOTRS - compatibile with other mods?

Been playing RFB with RSRDC and lovin' it. Just noticed FOTRS and realized that it's the only mega-mod that is still being actively worked. So I'm giving it a try. Can anyone tell me which of the more popular mods and modpacks are compatible? PE4? OTC? I know (sigh!) that RSRDC is out.

I'm sure this information is all somewhere in this forum. But the search engine here doesn't seem to get me much. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I know Optical Targeting Correction (OTC) won't work with FOTRS. As with the RSRDC versions, both add a lot of new/different ships to the stock game. Correcting the ship length and height measurements is one of the main objectives of OTC. What good is a ships measurements if the figure is so far off that the estimate could make a firing solution useless? We have that with several stock ships like the Hiryu CV in the TMO 2.5 version......it's height measurement is off by half of what it should be.

I've got plans to make a compatible version of OTC for FOTRS but I'll admit, "real life" has me doing other things than sitting at the computer for hours a day to get it done.

Thanks, CapnScurvy. It seems that most commonly used mods have been tweaked for TMO and RFB, but not for FOTRS. Oh, well. May just have to run it "as is."

BTW, what is this "real life" of which you speak?

AFAIK FOTRS mod is not very extra mod friendly and designed more to be used as-is.

that said im sure some mods will work with it you just have to see by trial and error.

i think the main reason for this is it touches on most aspects of the game therefore it contains most of the commonly modded files which means you cant use other mods that also use those files.

bottom line is is you want to mod FOTRS then you will most likely have to manually edit the FOTRS files to add any changes you want

Thanks, Webster. I have no ambition to become a modder. I'll take it as it comes. I retired from software development quite a few years ago, and, while I enjoyed it, I enjoy playing games a lot more. I am grateful to all the modders. They make my gaming more fun. They sure have made SH4 a lot more playable and enjoyable.

With FOTRS, I use:

MadMaxs SH4 DD Ship Pack v3.0

Eyepatch for TMO v1.7

NavMapMakeOver v2.1

New Large Lifeboat

Corrected Oar Colors (for the above mod)

Websters Real Lifeboat Fix for 1.5

24 Hour Clocks

Websters Missing Voices

Websters Easy To Read Game Text

And if you click on the link in my sig, you can download any or all of the FooBor subskins I have uploaded there. Other than that, just try different little mods. Just avoid things that change the campaign files.

Just make sure to use JSGME Mod Enabler, and try them one at a time, and remove them if they cause issues.

Also, any of the radio mods like Captain Midnight's CBS radio mods, and Fred's NBC radio mods are real cool for WWII era programs, and any of the WWII era music that can be added to the radio mods.

well 99% of the modding done for the game doesnt envolve hex codes or anything like that. most people mod their own game even if they dont share what they do or call themselves a modder.

the s3d utility shows you the value used for certain aspects in the game so no reading of code and you just change them to your liking so i think compared to what you used to do this is kindergarden level type stuff and half of the game files are simple text files that are opened, read, and edited with notepad

Webster, don't sell yourself and your fellow modders short. What you do in making a mod is about 90% of software development. Except for some of the nastiest debugging and device drivers, even programmers don't work in hex. Most code is written as a text file - english words, non-intuitive syntax, and extreme intolerance for errors, just like SH4 .cfg files. And there is nothing worse than trying to modify someone else's (undocumented, of course) code.

You are right. I have already modded a keyboard layout, since I couldn't find one ready-rolled that suited me. Not much of a mod, certainly not very difficult, but it sure felt like tweaking code. Was worth it, 'cos I now have a keyboard that is intuitive (to me!) and I only had to do the mod one time. But I'd rather been playing the game. BTW, had to gen the hex code for keystrokes, since I had a handy chart with decimal codes.:)

So please do keep developing and refining mods. They add a huge amount to the game. I doubt I would even bother to play the unmodded game. Actually I bought it when it was just released, got disgusted, and tossed it in a drawer, and only resurrected it about a month ago. But I never play the stock game. Many people don't have the resources or computer savvy to do their own mods. Others of us just lack the patience or inclination. So we rely on the excellent work of variously-talented modders like you. Kudos.

I second that.
