I wonder why we don't lend/lease an old LA class sub to our friends to the north?

at one time, there was a plan to make that happen, but the goverment at the time did not get along with US goverment (and the price tag was a major factor). Also as the article states, the US likes the fact that RCN has D/E boats to test detection tactics.

Despite the enormous cost: 750 million to purchase, 3 billion estimated in repairs/ maintenance by 2016, this may still work out. Provided there are no more major screw-ups we will have four D/E subs, two in the Atlantic and two in the Pacific. This will accomplish a couple of things. As captgeo says we can train with USN to hunt D/E subs and this country will continue to have a submarine fleet. Got my fingers crossed.:D

When they work like they're supposed to, they're very good subs as well. By design, they are still some of the best and most capable diesel-electric subs out there today. I'm all in favour of sticking out with this program to the end - it would be a colossal waste not to use them. Canada still needs something a little more air-independent for covering the Arctic, which is more and more a strategic area, but a working fleet of 4 diesel subs in the two main oceans is a good start.
