H.M.S HOOD's Bell

Quote:

An operation is to take place to recover the bell of the battle cruiser HMS Hood, which was sunk in 1941, it has been announced.
If recovered successfully, the bell will be used as a memorial...

I have mixed feelings about this, on one hand yes it's a nice idea and on the other hand I rather they not try this and leave the war grave alone.

They should leave it where it is HMS Hood is a war grave and should not be touched.

Oberon 07-29-12 06:02 AM

Agreed, let the old girl and her crew rest in peace.

*shrug* seems those connected to the ship want the bell recovered, and the bell is lying separate from the ship so they don't have to disturb the ship to retrieve it. So why not.

Exactly my feelings.

In a previous expedition, which did not disturb the wreck, the company discovered and photographed the bell, an MoD spokesman said.

It is lying on the seabed well away from the parts of the ship's hull, which will not be disturbed by the recovery operation, he added.

Mixed feelings...initially, leave the war grave alone, then okay if the bell is detached.

Can't help thinking how much the offer of a cost free operation weighted the decision.

Same, now I know the bell is detached.

I've still got two of these:

Purchased almost thirty years ago, my fathers was framed and has faded slightly but mine is still in the cardboard tube she came in.
