Silent Hunter 4 airplane problems

So since i can't cahnge the diffuculty in between missions I have it on medium cause easy isn't fun for me. I can dodge planes for upwards of 12 hours but then theres heaps of them and my AAs out of ammo and theres no battery left. Can someone tell me what to do:ping:

Armistead 07-09-12 08:12 PM

I assume you're playing stock, the plane traffic is unrealistic, planes show up in mass and where they shouldn't....most supermods correct this, but if you must play stock, I think Webster has a reduced plane mod that you should be able to find in the mods forum.

The simple tactic is when you get a plane on radar is to crash dive and stay down, then cut speed to 1kt to save battery, you should be able to stay under most the day. C02 levels will rise, but you still should be able to stay down.

Playing stock, you either dive constantly to avoid planes or just stay dived. You should never run out of battery dived, think the game will always give you 1kt, but you can always stop engines and save battery.

Make sure you have your scope and radar up before you surface so you can get a plane contact if one happens to be near before you come up.

Rather foolish to fight planes, avoid them.

I'm running a new campaign and its mid 42 up around Kiska I can not stay on the surface during the day ... there are jap planes everywhere up here.

ver 1.5, TMO 2.5 and RSRD

Yep! What Armistead said. I stay down during daylight hours. Like the WWII skippers, dive 1 hour before sunrise and suface 1 hour after sunset while in Empire controlled waters. The only time I surface during the day, is if I pick up a target worth risking surfacing during the daylight hours.

But while down below, change the telegrapg to the knot meter, and reduce it to 1 knot to conserve power, or just cut the electric motors and stay still.

I'm goin' down 07-10-12 09:43 PM

download websters fewer planes mod and activate it. (I am so smart I cannot believe myself.)

Alot of the mega mods allow you to install the air search radar on first patrol. avoiding planes with that installed is easy.

Try to assign crew with very pro gun skills at the AA gun helps to down planes if you want to stick to stock 1.5 (they get shot down very easily on stock). On stock v1.5 the crew is freaking surgical with them AA guns.

Rockin Robbins 07-14-12 01:36 PM

First of all, that AA gun is never supposed to be used. It's kind of like that poster of the frog shooting a bird at an eagle about to snatch and eat him. If you're using your AA gun you've already screwed the pooch.

The proper way to treat aircraft is never to be seen by them. Read it again. Because no matter what your mod configuration, when you start shooting your little popgun (it's been suggested that pointing with a finger and saying blam! Blam! would be more effective) that airplane has already called in all his airplane buddies to ruin your day. It makes no difference whether you shoot THIS guy down or not. You are already in deep kaka and the only easy way out involves death......yours!

All the airplane mods in the world won't help you if you keep broadcasting your fat juicy target self to the enemy by shooting that laundry drier at their planes. If you just follow the rule, you don't NEED a plane mod. If you find yourself in one of the overflight corridors, you'll just move out of it and wonder what all the fuss was about.

DON'T BE SEEN. That's rule one through twelve of piloting a submarine.:salute:

Indeed, get deep, get stealthy, get silent. That's a submariner's mantra. Rule 13 of piloting a submarine, in case you were curious, is closely related to the first 12, leave no witnesses! :arrgh!: Happy hunting!

This is a serious contender for the "most confusing metaphor" award.

Thx this helped a ton although it was what I was doing however I didn't realise you can move underwater with empty battery

Berserker 06-19-14 12:16 AM

Or you could put the ciws mod in the sim...So far on one patrol 2 emelies,2 mavis, and one betty...Poor japs come hell bent for leather, just to be hit with 20mm du rounds at 2000 rds per minute...:har:To bad we don't get points for nailing them...:nope:

prien1990 06-19-14 12:33 PM

You can change difficulty level while in port between patrols in the option menù.
Just change it to what you want and hit apply then start a new patrol with custom difficulty!!

The dive 1 hour before sunrise and surface 1 hour after sunset doesn't always work. I have seen fighters and bombers flying around at midnight both Japanese and American every year of the war..........

yep.

there is no connection between the radio message and aircraft behaviour.

do what you need to keep you and your crew alive.

try not to engage aircraft unless you absolutely have to engage them...because...whether you knock them down or not, they have these new technology-things called radios, and you will be subjected to a constant stream of aircraft.

good luck!
