Falklands Referendum

Not much doubt which way the vote will go :DL

The Falkland Islands are to hold a referendum on their "political status" in a bid to end the continuing dispute with Argentina over their sovereignty.

The vote will be held in the first half of 2013, the Falklands government said

No doubt whatsoever - but if the argentinian president needs any consoling after the results, she can come to my house. I'll uhm.... cheer her up!

So when do the people in Hong Kong get to vote on their future?

Herr-Berbunch 06-13-12 09:34 AM

Hong Kong long gone. Gibraltar next, but we'll wait until the Spanish economy is in a worse state.

Or St. Helena. Diego Garcia. A handful-or-so others.

Or, and here is the important bit, British Antarctic Territory - give the penguins the vote. But not 'our' Penguin. :03:

As soon as the Chinese realise there's no oil in the area.

Just a thought and I could be wrong, but Hong Kong was only on a 99 year lease?

Cheers

Gary

We haven't had HK since '97 when the lease expired, Chris Patton was the then governor, and once more a piece of the empire crumbled.

No but with a sort yes, that was only the New Territories which they leased rent free in 1898.
Hong Kong itself and Kowloon were both ceded permanently to the British crown.

Not that we could have held onto them...I was there in the late seventies then again in the early eighties and walking up the territorial boundary/street (I forget the name now, one wouldn't dare cross onto the other side seeing as at least one in ten of the pedestrians wore a uniform and had a rifle with bayonet attached slung across their backs.

When ashore in the area having a drink it was an unwritten rule that one of the company remained sober to ensure nobody 'strayed' into China.
