Declaring War on Heligoland?

So I started my new career, August 1, 1939 and took my boat out for a shakedown cruise, patrolling AN95.

Getting my guys some experience and qualifications. As I approach Heligoland the sounds of sirens and warning klaxon's reach my ears, all of a sudden the shore batteries start firing on my boat.

Long story short, because I am late reacting to the damage (when it started I was under 64x TC) and soon sink.

I was on the surface, but was just steaming along at 14kts, with no "gunnery or topedo practice taking place that would indicate to the shore that I was a threat.

Anyone else had this happen?

So, I guess I will have to start a new career. :har:

Did you sink anything at all before you got there? The war doesn't start until September 1, and every ship and nation is neutral. If you attack anything you automatically declare war on the the world for the next 24 hours, including your homeland.

May be the RN invaded and occupied Heligoland? :D

No, they only mined it. :O:

As I was departing Wilhelmshaven, I loaded and fired 5 rds with my deck gun at no target, and did the same with the AA gun, but did no damage to anything with my shots. Maybe this was determined to be an "act of war", hence the response when I was seen by the defenders of Heligoland.

Either that or the RN had indeed invaded and captured. Maybe this is really what started WWII in the first place and it wasn't the reported attack of at Gleiwitz, after all.

Not at all, Sir, not at all. :DL In accordance with the NATO doctrine you can attack every "red" unit even before the outbreak of WWI. "Only a dead RED is a good RED". That's the philosophie of SH3.

And in the "DefSide.cfg", you can define which nation is an "Allied" from the very first begining of your campaign. So you can sink all those ships. I'm using this in CCoM since lightyears.

Yes Heligoland is mined!

On my second Patrol Sept 39, I left The Keil Canal for my aloted Patrol Grid of the North East coast of Scotland. I decided to set my course past Heligoland, then head off in a northerly direction across the North Sea. I was running in normal time compression, whilst I decided to have my tea (evening meal) thinking that when I returned to my patrol, I should have just cleared Heligoland, ready to proceed north.

I came back to my computer, to find the screen stating that my career had ended with all crew dead.

Hmm! I thought! Look's like I had struck a mine, whilst having my tea. So be aware, there are mines around Heligoland.
