But seriously, it is about time.
I mean Startrek's Enterprise began with a female communication officer,
then there was a black man as commander of a space station,
and finally Mrs Janeway ..

We were properly prepared for this ! :DL

Actually it began with a female first officer. In the pilot with Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike, Majel Barret played 'Number One'.

No, you're not.

Of course from my point of view 40 is just a kid.

Steve, I was clearly referring to her reaching such a position by the age of 40 was not bad, nothing to do with her good looks.

Honestly. ;)

I'm rapidly approaching 40, so I shouldn't really be surprised that 40 year-olds can look so fine, like me. :D

Jimbuna 05-22-12 11:05 AM

Actually she's not the first but this is the largest RN warship that will have been commanded by a woman.

Congrats to Commander West! :woot:

What comes to this comment...

In an interview last year, Ursula Brennan, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Defence, told the Guardian that the armed forces needed to make more progress in recruiting, keeping and promoting women. She said the top brass needed "to get on with it" and put women in the most senior military posts.
...go ahead, as long as you don't lower the bar to archive it.

A Janeway? Oh no! :o

The Royal Navy has so few ships now they can't afford to lose the HMS Portland in the Delta Quadrant. :nope:

Don't forget the roles women got in TNG. The Enterprise-D had a women as Chief Medical Officer (twice), Chief of Security and in two episodes First Officer. Not to mention that most of the sane members of Starfleet Command shown were women (Stadi, and J.P. Hanson being the exceptions). plus a black women designed the Enterprise's engines.

So the Portland is going to wind up disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle then?

Anyway, people forget the first woman Federation captain shown in Star Trek:

Some Starfleet officers would disagree on the sane part... :hmmm:
