Stupid question
 

I am just starting to play with SH4 WOP and in reading the manual it mentions resetting the TDC by clicking the X on the note pad.
I can't find a note pad!

There are no stupid questions, only stupidly written manuals...:D

Seriously, the manual is crap. If you've got any furniture that isn't level, then cut the pages out with the keyboard mapping (or use the quick reference guide) and use it to prop up the short leg.

Instead, go to here. and watch the videos. Start with the WernerSobe videos or Legions Noob Guide, then hit the Rockin' Robbin's videos (or just jump in with Rockin' Robbin's). Those will demonstrate Subsim's 'Industry Best Practices' for how to use the tools provided.

WernerSobe and Legion's videos, at least to me, struck me as (slightly) more concerned with the theory behind what you're doing. The Rockin' Robbin's videos are all about getting you started on your own artificial reef projects with the minimum of fuss and muss. They'll have you racking up tonnage from your first outing, guaranteed.

Another note is, even if you aren't ready to use Manual targeting, you can 'error check' yourself by setting up a Dick O'Kane or John P. Cromwell attack using the technique explained in the videos and the using the Auto Targeting for the shot itself. Measure the speed and course, jot down what you came up with, and then set up your approach for those values. Then, compare your guess with the TDC values when you finally lay eyes on her. If you've got it right, then you have confirmation that you knew what you were doing. And if you didn't, the auto targeting will adjust for you. It allows you to learn their techniques with a bit of help to make up your mistakes. It also teaches you good approach, which is 90% of the shot (probably the hardest 90% too). I took down a boat with auto targeting on last night that I couldn't see at all. Heavy precip, Heavy fog, visibility of less than 200 yards. But because I had an accurate speed measurement (verified 3 times) and course (similarly checked) and range (I was pinging him constantly, thank goodness merchants can't hear) and I got right down to the arming distance before firing to minimize errors (I fired from 550 yards), I was able to fire ahead of him when the sonar man reported him on a given bearing and hit him right beneath the stack and bagged a Ryuun Maru without ever laying eyes on it. Same night, same storm, I bounced a torp off the hull of another maru, I drifted in under 400 yards... But I would have hit just head of the screws... :damn:

SH4 did not come with a manual. It did, however, come with a paper coaster with the SH4 artwork on the top. :D

Sadly, the best manual for the game is the forums here. Some parts of the manual appear to have been written by people who never got very close to the finished game.

I have watched Werners remarkable video through a couple of times and have the links to the other videos bookmarked and that has me somewhat ready to try a patrol.
The question I have is where is this thing called the note pad! I have the TDC panel on the left and input dials/torpedo panel on the right but I don't see an X on any of them.
The reason I am asking is I had worked myself into a decent approach to a convoy and during a periscope check I found a destroyer had aligned itself for a perfect snap shot. I wanted to quickly convert the periscope to a point and shoot deal rather than the TDC info on the merchant I had entered. turning the red tracking button off did not seem to reset the speed and all that already entered.

I have seen some threads describing a non TDC shot but this one was not planned. Since the manual mentions an X on the note pad and I have seen resetting the TDC mentioned in the forums I Just need to figure out this notepad thing! :-? I assume it is a nomenclature issue with me but I just cant see it.

The note pad is for the U-Boats. The US boats don't have one. To reset you have to turn off the red button (Position Keeper or PK) and set the scope to 0. Then click on the heading/range input dial. Then switch to speed and enter 0.

If there is a quicker way, I'd appreciate it if someone would let me know.

What we REALLY need is a good manual written in Chinglish!

Heck I can't make up anything as good as they have. Let me quote the manual from my 808 Spy Camera: "hope it can help your life safe and happiness."


Chinglish is amazing! It's much more entertaining that just reading a Silent Hunter 4 manual that is merely completely useless.:D
